My four year old daughter loves these books. We've read every one of them. She sits quietly through 5 or 6 chapters a night. It depends on the child of course, but these books are more than suitable for children 4 and above.

My 6 yr-old loves Princess Ellie, not least because she is fortunate enough to have a horse of her own and can relate to all the "horsey" adventures. We bought the first two in the series then bought a few others as we couldn't wait to find out what happened next. They're fun stories, with short enough chapters to keep children interested. There are no colour illustrations, just a few pen and ink ones, so I wouldn't recommend the books for kids under 6.

I bought this book based primarily on its title because my daughter's name is Ellie and she's crazy about all things princess. What could be better than a book with a central character named Princess Ellie?

The book is rated for ages 4-8, and that's the category we tend to buy in even though my daughter is 3.5. We have dozens of other books rated for that age category bought through Amazon, but this is the first one that turned out to be a chapter book with very little artwork. I know very few of my friends' kids who will sit and listen to a chapter book like this with only pencil sketch artwork (and not even on every page). It was just too dense.

I'd suggest this book for kids who are already reading themselves but still like to have a parent read to them at bedtime. I'm guessing a typical 5- or 6-year-old would be able to focus better on following the story and would be more familiar with the vocabulary. And kids on the upper edge of the age range would be able to read it themselves.

My kid is smart and has a huge vocabulary for her age, but this book was beyond her right now, and I was disappointed by that.
