I bought this doll on sale for $20.00 and I still feel that that was a little pricey. As far as the looks of the doll it is wounderful but the pen and book are another story.First the book is not that well made and I am certain will not last.Secondly the pen has to be pressed hard to get it to work. The pen also has a button on it that must be pushed everytime you turn the page to start a new activity and you must also touch the pen to the strawberry that says start here.Too many steps to start a new activity, infact my daughters favorite part about this set is the tiny back pack that came with it to fit the doll. The activities in the book are not very educational either. They are simply music notes or naming a character, there is no real interaction or questions.A cute idea but not well thought out.In my opinion this doll is only worth about $10.00.I would not buy it unless you find it at that price or you will be disappointed.

My 3 year old daughter got this doll as a Chirstmas present. It has not worked correctly since the first day. I would not recommed this for anyone. Every time she tries to use the doll with the book I just get frustrated and tell her to just play pretend with the doll. The doll it's self is very cute. It is a shame that the technology is so poor.

I agree with the other people who wrote a review...can't figure out the sequence of events or maybe stylus does not work. Child not happy and tired of hearing Shortcake say the same thing over and over. Save your money and buy a good book for your kid!!!

This was a must have on my daughters list. It is way over priced. I wish that we would have returned it. I was not happy after we first took her out of the package. For what she cost I really expected her to have more activities in her book to do and Like some of the other reviews our scanner does not work. Please spend your money on something else.

My daughter loves Strawberry Shortcake. This interactive doll and book are uninteresting and do not work together very well. The book has to be on a flat surface and then still does not work well. The doll and book quickly became seperate toys and neither are played with very often.

A Christmas Day Disappointment,

My 5.5 year-old daughter asked Santa for this doll for Christmas. It's a disappointment. She is very cute and I really wish she was just a cuddly doll without the fancy scanner and book thing. Ours doesn't work. We've read and reread the simplistic directions, replaced and rearranged the batteries...and, the interactive part just doesn't work correctly. After activating the doll, one is supposed to place the end of the scanner on the "start" dot at the top of each page in order to "tell" the doll which page she's on. Our doll would only give the correct response about one third of the time--the rest of the time her response was a maddeningly cheerful "Try again!". Something was messed up, electronically. Some electronic toys provide some troubleshooting ideas to try if something isn't working properly; this one doesn't. So, back it goes. I wish I'd gone with one of the soft, low-tech dolls instead of wasting money on this one--it wasn't cheap. We're off to Gramps' house now, Merry Christmas!

Technology 20 years old!,

I bought this Strawberry Shortcake doll for my 4 year old daughter for Christmas. When I was a little girl Strawberry Shortcake was very popular. The marketing for the re-unveiling of Strawberry Shortcake has great timing---just when I am having my own children (they get us on the nastalgia). Anyways, the technology on this doll reminds me of the technology that was available when I was growing up in the 1980's, and the interaction doesn't work correctly. The interactive pen doesn't recognize what page I am on half of the time. The page that I think is the most educational, when Strawberry Shortcake is supposed to read a story, is not even programmed. I have tried and retried to make this part work, but it has just been a complete failure. I am pretty disapointed in this doll, however, we opted to keep it because I got an excellent deal on it. I would have rather spent ten dollars more for up-to-date technology that actually works. My recommendation is to wait until next year. Maybe the company will come out with a higher quality doll.

When it works, great, but the singing leaves more to be desired.,

Well, having been bitten by the Strawberry Shortcake bug over the last few months (hey, I'm a geek. The "this is a girls' toy" thing doesn't apply in the name of technology), my mouth foamed when I saw this item - "I definately mus have it, the technology sounds so cool". However, like the Fisher-Price Laugh and Learn Learning Puppy, this toy wasn't available in Malaysia either (in fact, the only toys I ever saw are those little collectible dolls, and a few other plushes which I regretted not buying. Nothing else. And those have disappeared as of late too). So, I swallowed my pride and got it off eBay too. A little under RM200 and 3 weeks later, the doll arrived. Now, I have not saw any of these review when I bought mine, but the toy arrived fine, with working pen and all (tried replacing the battery?). So, all systems go. Time to see this baby sing.
My first complaint about the doll is that the book has an activity that states to scan the dots in order to hear the entire song. Perhaps they should've said "the song replayed" instead, because that certainly isn't the whole song I hear (having watched "Meet Strawberry Shortcake" and heard the songs in their full, completed glory). I absolutely loved "Friendship Grows Like a Flower", and was dismayed when the song wasn't played to completion. Neither was "Strawberry Girl in Strawberry World", a.k.a "Jump and Clap and Turn Around". Or the other songs for that matter. Maybe there's some demo tab that must be removed. But there's nothing on it on the manual. Box? I foolishly thrown out the box before I had a chance to fully check it. Ouch. Another thing is that one of the buttons on the first activity states to scan to find out "who is baking a delicious treat". Scanning it reveals the phrase "have a delicious day" instead. Did Angel Cake gain the nickname "Delicious Day" sometime? Other notes on the toy is better. The pen is kinda interesting to me, although the activities offered are kinda so-and-so, but the pen... well, it scans a surface for a particular color. Different color = different reaction. Interesting technology. And the backpack to keep the pen in when not in use. Ingenious and prevents the danger of leaving the pen and cabling exposed. Another thing I've taken to like about the doll is the "You're My Berry Best Friend" music clip. Although short, I actually liked it so much that I devised a method to play the song without scanning the book at all (scan a nearby Good-Luck Bear plush's clover to activate the mode, then carefully scan Strawberry's hat. With any luck the clip would start playing). Other things? Well, the book looks kinda sturdy (to my standard), and pressing her right hand makes her talk, but you already knew that. She says a couple of phrases which seems to come at random order, but that's fine by me. In a nutshell, it's a nice toy, although it doesn't sing the entire song.

We got this as a birthday gift. I don't know why no one else seems to know how to work it, but we are enjoying this toy. My 2 year old has figured it out and we're having a blast. Our magic pencil works just fine. I would definately recommend. My daughter loves hearing the songs and playing with her "cake" as she calls Strawberry Shortcake.

As with all the other reviews I was very Disappointed. The pen attached to the doll does not work with the book. The doll keeps repeating "Will you play a song with me?" My 4 year old daughter was very fustrated with the doll. The hardware is 1980's and is not what is shown on the box.I would not waste the money on this doll.
