A quick, enjoyable read, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Twin Surprise (Times Two) (Harlequin American Romance # 1177) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the description from the Publisher:
"The scars from Marta Lawson's near-fatal accident have faded, but she still doubts her ability to attract a man--never mind one as handsome as the Villazon police department's Derek Reed. But when the sergeant comes up for auction at a charity event, her friends have the winning bid--and a dream date with the blond poster boy turns out to be her birthday gift.
Finding herself in the arms of the charismatic cop is so intoxicating she throws caution to the wind, and she's not totally surprised a month later when her doctor gives her some (doubly!) electrifying news she dreads sharing with the elusive bachelor.
But he's hiding a surprise, too. Will it break them apart--or bring them closer together?"
As noted in the other review the secret Derek's hiding is the fact that he's been diagnosed with Parkinson's. To me this doesn't make the book depressing, I like books that show the hero/heroine dealing with real life issues. I thought the way the author handled both Marta and Derek's feelings regarding their physical problems was well done. Derek's emotional issues stemming from his rebellious teen years also seemed realistic to me. My only complaint with the book is due to the length - I prefer longer romances with more time to fill out the story. That said, the author did a great job within the length allowed. While I'd have liked a longer book, this one did not seem rushed.
One note - the author has a previous book called Daddy Protector that is related (I hesitate to call 2 books a series but there may be more in the future, the author seems to hint at it). Both books stand alone, but if you liked one you'll probably like the other and most of the secondary characters appear in both.

Yuck!!!, January 13, 2008
This review is from: Twin Surprise (Times Two) (Harlequin American Romance # 1177) (Mass Market Paperback)
Personally, when I purchase a romance novel, there are certain elements that I expect to read in the book. Heroes with an incurable disease is not one of them. I could tolerate the heroine with scars and rehab from an accident, but giving the hero Parkinson disease was beyond the pale. I couldn't get too far past that announcement and had to just put the book down. If I want to read about depressing subjects, I will purchase a fiction novel. There should have been a warning on this book to alert us that this is not a conventional romance book.
