Book Description

A serial killer is leaving a trail of dead women across Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. The gruesome corpses all seem to have died in exactly the same macabre way. There may be a link to a small group of scientists who meet annually in different locations in the region. Roger Bowman and Suzanne Foster are asked by the local police to attend this year’s meeting of the group in Lima, Peru to try to find out who was present at the previous meetings when the murders occurred. And the reader is off on a fast paced pursuit of the killer through Lima, Cuzco, and Machu Picchu in Peru and Chile’s Atacama Desert. This is a true whodunit mystery novel set in an unusual and exotic locale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great thriller! March 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
We are once again joining Roger Bowman and Suzanne Foster, except this time they are Mr & Mrs Bowman and Suzanne is 3 months pregnant. Someone is brutally killing and mutilating women in South America. The brutality of the kills and the way the killer burns the bodies after has earned him the name 'The Surreal Killer'. Eduardo - the Paraguayan Police Chief from 'The Ambivalent Corpse' has once again asked for Roger and Suzanne's help. Whilst infiltrating a Biochemist Convention, can they find out who the killer is and stop him before it becomes too late?

This was a great follow up to 'The Ambivalent Corpse'. It stands alone very well, but does make references to the previous story so I would advise you read that one first. It was once again an unstoppable page turner. Present again were the dubious puns at the end of the chapters and the now familiar tourist guide approach. (Macchu Picchu is also going on my holiday list!) Alongside that was an utterly absorbing thriller. I was challenged by the author about half way through to guess who the killer was. I was sure I knew but thought it was too obvious and possibly a red herring. To me this is the mark of a good thriller, the author throwing bones and then taking you in an utterly different direction. Of course I was wrong and it was someone totally different! Well done Jerry for successfully keeping on my toes! I am eager to read book 4 now - keep them coming please!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Surreal Killer April 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is Jerry Last's best thriller yet. His two protagonists, Roger Bowman and Dr. Suzanne Foster could rank with Dennis Lehane's duo,Kenzie and Gennaro as a couple of super sleuths, although Bowman and Foster's patch is the high Andes where they are on the trail of a sadistic machete murderer. A compelling, fast-paced story and a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different kind of serial killer mystery April 20, 2012
By Sharon
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very much enjoyed this book, the first I've read by this author, but not the last.

The serial killer plot is believable and well crafted with an interesting twist. The author, instead of going for the gore and splash, is focused on the deductive process, a much more cerebral process. There is a great deal of fascinating detail about the culture and people of several South American countries and cities as well as truly vivid descriptions of the land and the Inca history and culture.

My biggest personal "like" about this book is the fact the author did not have the one female investigator do something careless/stupid and almost become a victim, only to be rescued at the last minute.

My one personal criticism is that the habit of a pun between the main characters before going to sleep seemed a little too much of a good thing ... by halfway through the book I was skipping them.
