Editorial Reviews

Review

"Surrealism and the Visual Arts is an excellently researched companion through this hectic journey." The Art Book, Robert Radford, University of East Anglia

Book Description

This 2005 study traces the development of Surrealist theory of visual art and its reception, from the birth of Surrealism to its institutionalization in the mid-1930s. Situating Surrealist art theory in its theoretical and discursive contexts, Kim Grant demonstrates the complex interplay between Surrealism and contemporary art criticism.

Kim Grant gives a great overview of the theories and thought behind Surrealism, exploring André Breton's beginning ideals and hopes for the movement and how other artists and writers translated it into their own work. Despite it being a text about an art movement, there is very little artwork reproduced in this book, and what is printed is in sometimes hard-to-decipher black and white.

It's an excellent source to understand the broad thinkers and concepts, as Surrealism is a very cerebral movement that Breton envisioned to have very little formal qualities or qualifiers, but if you're looking for a greater understanding of the visual pieces that are associated with Surrealism, you'll have to find another text.
