Acoustic/Urban/Gospel/ Soul Music at its BEST,
By jay (Dallas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Surrender (Audio CD)
Out of all the cds I've purchased in 2003, Debra Killings, Surrender, is the best cd of 2003 so far. She's bring fresh music and innovation to the gospel genre (which has tendecies to be too cliche and repetitive by singing "I Made It" and repeating it 100 times). One of my favorite musical instruments is the acoustic guitar, and Debra is BRINGING IT. I love every song on this cd (Message In the Music, Change, Oh My God, Love, etc). You can add Debra to this new crop of urban artists who is multi-talented (she sings, writes, produces, and plays her own instruments) ala Tonex and Deitrick Haddon.Know doubt, you will not be disappointed with this project. Who do I compare her music to? (you know how we all like to compare). Debra's music is a fusion of Lauryn Hill, India Airie, Erykah Badu, and Alicia Keys.

This album was okay. It had that neo/R&B vibe. I really haven't heard of Debra but when I heard her sing "Message in the Music" I decided to give her a try. My favorite songs were "Surrender", "Jesus", and "Because of Your Love". I definately thought she could do without those interludes. I don't know if those were her kids but it was very annoying. But overall this was a decent album.

A big bowl of hot buttery grits,

I would say neo, but this music rings of truly authentic soul gospel music. It has all of the main ingredients, the grit, the love, the pain and the joy. The rythyms are on the one two, nicely chopped drums laced with acoustic guitar melodies. Debra's voice is a breath of fresh air on every track. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

I heard the first single "Message in the Music" and I fell in love with Debra Killings's music. Jesus is such a beautiful song and so is Oh My God. My other favorite is "Without Him". Overall the cd is fantastic.

Oh My God!,
This review is from: Surrender (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD not having heard anything by Debra Killings. I drove around with the unopened CD on the front seat of my car. After having had it in my car for such a long time, and fearing it was too late to take it back to the store from which I purchased it, I decided to listen to it. I am certainly glad that I kept the CD. The songs are great and the music is awesome. When I am stuck in traffic or just riding to and from work I love to play this CD. There are some upbeat songs and some soul stirring songs as well on this album. The upbeat song that I like best is Do Right. The song that most stirs my soul is Even When. I love this CD and I am looking forward to new releases by Debra Killings in the future. The interludes were no bother to me. I simply selected the next track.

Rarely do you find a CD that captivates you the first time you listen to it...even more rarely does an new artist leaves you wanting more ear candy. Her soulful sound and spiritual "intuneness" makes this CD far better than any other I've heard in a long time. I recommend this to anyone who wants to be blessed with wonderful music to listen to.

Pretty good for a Newcomer of Gospel music,

Yeah she's is definitely the best out there period. In gospel history, she's is definitely serving the Lord on her album "Surrender". I thank God 4 her wonderful talent and hopefully she'll put out another one on the way. Like to say, I was gonna give 5 stars, but go down 1 spot to 4.5 stars 4 doing a lotta work. She has work with the music greats that are not into "gospel" but "secular" 4 example, TLC, India.Arie, Brian McKnight, OutKast, Monica, Goodie Mob, Brandy, movie soundtracks, etc. That's all I can think of.
Some of my favorite songs are: Message in the Music, Oh I, Without Him, Love, Oh My God, Do Right, Come On, Because of Your Love, and Ain't Nobody. I'd first purchased on Sound and Spirit free along w/ Kirk Franklin's album, Tonex's and others. Yep this is one of my favorites to date along w/ Tonex' Out the Box which is a brand new masterpiece. I recommend this if wanna hear neo-soul gospel than they secular neo-soul. A must if u love Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, TLC, Sade, D'Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Musiq, Tonex, Kirk Franklin, Joye B. Moore, Miles Davis, Grover Washington Jr., Fred Hammond, Donny Hathaway, Smokie Norful, Jazzhole, Tribe Called Quest, among others.

This is a neo-soul must. I don't like the skits but otherwise I love it.

Debra Killings has done something on the cd "Surrender" that no other music minister has done. That is, made a cd where EVERY SONG is great. I am a fan of Virtue, Trin-I-Tee 5:7, Out of Eden, Deitrick Haddon, Tonex and more but this lady is TOPS. If you like any of my above mentioned music ministers then CHECK HER OUT!!! This cd blew me away. A reviewer below stated that "nothing in gospel sounds like this", well they were right and then some. This is this BEST CD I have heard and I am blessed to have bought it. Usually I list a favourite track or two but this cd is SO GOOD I find it hard to choose. If I was forced to i'd choose "Surrender" and "Oh My God" as stand out tracks, but to stand above greatness says something a lot about her cd. BUY IT NOW!! Can't wait for a sophmore release. |
