My first Rosemary Rogers' novel,
By Michelle888 (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Surrender To Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This was the first Rogers' book that I read and that was more than 10 years ago. I have since re-read it twice and each time I still feel drawn to the characters. The first meeting between Alexandra Howard and Nicholas Dameron, when they both decide to go for a late night swim in the Governor's pool, is one of my favorite parts in this book and it promises of much more exciting encounters between these two. The storyline is well told and the character development is good. You get to see Alexa swept from her safe haven in Ceylon to the dangerous and worldly playgrounds of the rich in Europe, as a result of the discovery of her true parentage. You see her develop from a rather naive debutante, whose passion was roused by Nicholas, to a fully grown woman, intent on taking revenge against her real father and grandmother. As for Nicholas, we see an arrogant, cold man who at times acts so despicably towards women, yet learning about his past gives you a better understanding of him. And despite the hard exterior, there are some tender moments between him and Alexa, which I found enjoyable. We also see him redeem himself by protecting Alexa from the torture that her father puts him through. This book deals with a lot of deceit and scandals, and there's a bit of bodice-ripping as well. When I first read this, I was rather shocked, but open-minded enough even at a young age to know that this is just fiction, and something not to be taken too seriously. And having just finished reading Sweet Savage Love, I think that this is a lot tamer. The things I didn't like about this are the lengthy narratives and the italicized words, which seem to be on every page. Quite annoying really. The ending also seems a bit rushed considering the size of the book. But overall, I enjoyed reading this and give it 4 and a half stars.

Very long yet slightly entertaining book..,

I was only half pleased after reading this book. I am such an avid fan of Rosemary Rogers' books, although I found myself getting tired of her repetition in characters (the dark, hard man and the naive, beautiful, virgin girl).. not to say that this book does not follow that trend. It surely does but I was definitely surprised because the storyline did not go as I expected. In most of her books, I find that although the male has such a hard exterior, he finds himself in love with the girl. But Rogers failed to give the reader Nicolas' perspective. I liked the fact that all the past books I've read by her always brought you into the male's thoughts. Because their characters are so secretive and unemotional, you need to know how they truly feel. This book did not do that for me, so their final reunion was almost unbelieveable or forced. Alexa's character at times annoyed me immensely. There were far too many ugly situations she was put through where it made her character a little less attractive. Oh, and I have to agree with some of the other reviews when they say that you might have to read parts over and over to understand it. It does seem as though the scenes just jump around without warning. But I'll admit that once I begun reading the book, for some strange reason, I couldn't put it down. And if you are purchasing the hardcover book, please DO NOT look at the paper covering because the picture of the characters can really ruin it for you. I almost didn't read the book because they were so ugly.

I have always been an avid reader of Rosemary Rogers, waiting many months to read each and every one of her books. I was surprised to find I had not read this one and was excited to get home and dive into this one. After reading three or four chapters, I found I was re-reading certain parts because I couldn't understand what was being said. Usually, I do not have this problem but this book threw me. Some chapters were easy to read and understand and others were difficult. I have never encountered this with Rosemary's other books. It was also alittle darker then the other novels of hers I have read. Do I recommend this book..Yes, If you are an avid Rogers reader...If not, try one of her other books, like Sweet Savage Love, first, then read this last. You'll be glad I suggested it.

Rosemary Rogers is the Queen. This book is such an adventure it's impossible to sum it up. However, if you only like "sweet" books, this is not for you. [RR is know for being a bodice-riper]

Not the best read,

This review is from: Surrender To Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I was disappointed by this novel. The love represented in the title is hard to find in the book. The characters have a physical relationship that lacks tenderness and edges the perverse. Alexa's father is perverse, her mother's sister is a madame. The father she grew up with is a stepfather and begins to have sexual feelings towards her after her mother's death so she flees to 'Uncle John' (he can't have a sexual relationship due to an injury) who has always been her champion and wants to leave all his worldly goods to her so they marry since he will die in less than a year. After all the hurtful things Alexa and Nicholas have done to each other, it is hard to decern how they end up together in the end because I kept thinking where is the love. The book was too verbose. I kept feeling as though I had to labor through it instead of floating into another world as I do with a great book. If you don't like sexual relationships that are on the edge of perverse and mindless, don't bother to read this book. It may be historical but it greatly lacked romance.

Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover,

I was very excited when I saw a new book would soon be available by Rosemary Rogers. However, when it arrived and I began reading it, I quickly saw that it was a reissue of the 1982 novel, with a new cover. Wish it had been a new book, one about Steve and Ginny.

Warning! not for the faint at heart!,
This review is from: Surrender To Love (Mass Market Paperback)
This book - as with many by RR, has many dark twists. If you're not a fan of the seedier side of history, bad boy, alpha-male hero, etc. this is not for you. As usual, Rogers captures an element of truth in the seedier side of human nature, and the sometimes shockingly lascivious side of the jaded British upper class. There is force, bondage, hash-smoking from hookahs, etc. I am a fan of Rogers in that her novels are more a character study often of the main heroine, rather than a straight romance. This one gets a thumbs up from me, although there were elements in the plot I would have seen improved. VERY involved plot and complex characters by a master writer!

I first read this book years ago and continue to read it annually, as it is soooo good. I can safely say, Ms. Rogers' earlier novels are ALL keepers!!!

I have never seen so many italics in one book in my entire life! It ruined the story completely, not to mention that some of the story was just plain confusing. I almost thought I needed to be on some kind of medication to read this thing.
