5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to Believe, April 13, 2000

John H. Stanley (Bahamas, visiting from Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Surrounded on Three Sides (Florida Sand Dollar Books) (Paperback)
It's hard to believe that this book was written so longago. The language and characterizations are as fresh as tomorrow'snewspaper. I was introduced to this book by the author's son...a fishing guide in the Bahamas. It's a quick, but satisfying read. Keasler writes with the same understanding of the human comedy exhibited by Jimmy Buffet: If you enjoy changes in lattitudes and attitudes, you'll have a couple of quite enjoyable afternoons on the beach with Keasler's characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny and a superb writer., April 27, 2009
This book is howlingly, screamingly, fall on the floor funny.

John Keasler's Miami News and Miami Herald columns were witty and poignant and frequently outright hilarious, but he truly outdid himself in this book.

He preserved for posterity the wacky, totally off the wall essence of Florida.

If you enjoyed the early writing of Carl Hiaason and Dave Barry, (back when they were still fresh and original and funny), you will absolutely LOVE this book. It's ten times better than Hiaason and Barry combined.

Timeless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun look at a long lost part of Florida, June 27, 2007

This review is from: Surrounded on Three Sides (Florida Sand Dollar Books) (Paperback)
Light and breezy, this book which was written in the 1950's captures much of the atmosphere of post WW II Florida. The message of concern over the loss of history and a sense of place comes through but with a sense of humor. The overall tone reminds me somewhat of John Cheever and John D. Macdonald with whisky drinking, broads and male bonding.

5.0 out of 5 stars KEASLER GOT IT ALL!, September 10, 1999
This review is from: Surrounded on Three Sides (Florida Sand Dollar Books) (Paperback)
I am so pleased that this book is once again available! I have an autographed original edition, complete with dust jacket. John was the latter day, deadpan Mark Twain of Florida, sort of like one of those claw machines full of whistles, yo-yos and ping-pong balls in a penny arcade. You never knew what he'd come up with next. John really got into the spirit of it all. I wish that a collection of his hilarious newspaper columns were available! A funny read!
