"An easy, enjoyable and (as usual) thought-provoking read."--Georgia Historical Quarterly
"Contains some wonderful examples of what academic writing has become and is itself proof that solid narrative can be combined with a clear purpose. This work is a valuable addition to the collection of anyone interested in the South. It provides an introduction to the work of some scholars who have been neglected and further food for thought about just what defines the South."--Southern Historian
John Shelton Reed is the author of many books, including My Tears Spoiled My Aim and Other Reflections on Southern Culture, Whistling Dixie: Dispatches from the South, The Enduring South, and Southern Folk, Plain and Fancy. He is William Rand Kenan, Jr., Professor of Sociology, Adjunct Professor of American Studies, and Director of the Institute for Research in Social Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
