More About the Author

Duncan Long (http://DuncanLong.com/) is a freelance writer/illustrator who has authored 13 novels including Anti-Grav Unlimited (Avon Books), the Spider Worlds triology (HarperCollins), and the Night Stalkers series (Harper Collins). He's also written 60-some technical books and how-to manuals (with Paladin Press, Delta Press, Lyons Press/Globe Pequot, and others). Additionally, he's ghostwritten over a dozen titles for TV, radio, and stage celebrities.

Some of Long's technical manuals can be found in the private libraries of the CIA, US Marines, FEMA, the FBI's FTU (Firearms Training Unit), and other US agencies. Excerpts from his books and technical drawings have even appeared in US Congressional hearings.

As an illustrator Long has created cover and interior illustrations for HarperCollins, PS Publishing (UK), Byron Preiss/ibooks, Pocket Books, Fort Ross, American Media, Delirium Books, Ballistic Media, Mermaid Books, Swimming Kangaroo Books, and others. His artwork also appears in national magazines (including the Sun and Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine), and at Web sites and on CD covers.

Long's illustrations are noted for their often whimsical, dreamlike quality. Talk-show host Victor Thorn named Long one of the three "best graphic artists in the entire world." And the reviewer at 3D Millennium (M3 Corp., Inc.) wrote about Long's collected works, "To call him a prolific artist would be understatement, at best. Get yourself a snack and settle back while Duncan takes you on a wild ride through worlds only he has dreamt of."

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and well written, September 26, 2005

Review of Survival Bartering

When I first received this little book, I was disappointed that it was so small. I didn't think it could possibly have much to offer as far as information on bartering.

On the contrary, I was most pleasantly surprised! From the very start, just about every paragraph was packed with good solid information on all aspects of bartering! Even though I have bartered some throughout my life, I still learned a great deal! Some instructions in the book were methods of bartering that I have already used successfully but I appreciated being able to read them in a concise way that helped capsulate my experiences. The verbal illustrations in the book allowed me to see the reasoning behind various practices in bartering. Also, there was a large amount of new material that I am able to make good use of.

This book is not just for reading through once! It is like a bartering bible that you can refer back to from time to time.

I read portions to members of my family, and after listening a while, each person asked me if they could read the book too.

Something that I really appreciated about the book was that it was simply written where even an eighth grader could read and understand it. I thought it was very well organized. Because I am nearly a senior citizen, very small print is becoming difficult for me to read. It was so nice to see well laid out paragraphs with 12 point print rather than very long paragraphs with the smaller 10 point print.

The reason I bought this book is because I want to have better bartering skills for the same reasons someone would purchase any type of insurance. If difficult times were to come about in my life, I will have newly honed bartering skills to fall back on. If money becomes scarce for any reason, I can use bartering in order to purchase much needed items or services.

In the back of the book there are several pages of recommended reading with brief summaries and mailing addresses. There are books listed here that you surely will be surprised and pleased to find.

I highly recommend "Survival Bartering" to anyone with an interest in bartering and I applaud Duncan Long for his excellent presentation!

3.0 out of 5 stars plusses and minuses, December 31, 2010

the author lays out the many cases for survival bartering in a straight forward, practical fashion, as it should be.
overall though, i don't feel i was taught much of anything- only reminded or honed on things i already knew about or were common sense to anyone that has ever read survival books or thought about disaster preparedness. the few things that were different in this book were related to things that i -or many people- have no access to in normal life- livestock etc. and while i understand that those would be great items and skills to have, livestock keeping is not for everyone- even in our current economy. best to let the farmers become farmer/barterers and leave the other specialty bartering occupations to the rest of us. i was hoping to find more information for the 'everyman' and was just reminded of the things i already know or taught myself.
when TSHTF, i guess i'll be a scavenger and tinkerer after all.

3 stars though because this is a good introductory booklet to whet the appetite for those who are just now curious about emergency preparedness and post-society bartering. it will merely put you on the hunt for more, and more specific- information- which can only be a good thing. i also have to give respect and credit where it is due- to some of the earliest and best survival booklets there were- from loompanics, before every starbucks drinking, hummer driving weekend warrior could go buy survival books at barnes and noble.
