Much better books out there; try SURVIVAL GARDENING by John A. Freeman and his excellent follow up book SURVIVAL GARDENING COOKBOOK.
Dick Raymond's JOY OF GARDENING is fantastic, along with GROWING AND CANNING YOUR OWN FOOD by Jack Clay and THE RESILIENT GARDENER by Carol Deppe.
