If the answer is no, Survival: Prepare Before Disaster Strikes offers common sense, drama-free advice on food storage, preparedness goods and getting your home survival-ready - whether it is in the city or the country - that won't break the bank!

Barb Fix grew up on a homestead in Alaska where -20 degree winters made self-sufficiency the "norm". In winter and summer, water was packed in, bathing was done in a sauna or the lake that fronted the property, and the call of nature was answered by dodging moose on the way to an outhouse.

Now living on an off-grid homestead in North Idaho, Barbara is a published author of many self-sufficiency related articles and just recently completed Survival: Prepare Before Disaster Strikes, which is now available on Amazon Kindle as well as in paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You Want to Know About Survival! October 12, 2011
By Ajax1
Format:Kindle Edition
The Survival Diva website has everything you want to know or could even imagine to ask about preparedness. Barbara Fix has written a book which I've just read, and it is excellent! Clearly and concisely written, it covers everything from purchase or construction of your home or outhouse to canning, drying, or storing the produce from your garden. She has sections on how to purchase land, get a loan, owner financing, etc. The book offers the very basics, up to and including everything you could possibly need to know about living on limited resources after a crash. What kinds of stoves and cooking apparatus you might need. Endless lists of foods, spices, tools, etc. Electricity or no electricity? Alternative types of energy are covered. This in depth work, as far as I can see, hasn't missed a topic. At the end of each chapter, she gives other links where you can find more info on each subject! I highly recommend this book if you are wanting to cover all your bases in the preparedness game. The book is in Kindle format or as a download to your computer, and it is very inexpensive as well. Just $7.75 for all her research and knowledge. Now that's a bargain, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for suburban prepper and first time retreater February 3, 2012
By Alan
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
However, it's not a tactical manual, and does not cover subjects like "hand to hand" combat, knives, or firearms. but the subjects it cover is useful to the first time retreater or the unaware city/suburban family dweller and it has a great blog site. "Survival: Prepare Before Disaster Strikes" offer an no sense, drama-free advice on food storage, preparedness goods and getting your home or retreat area, ready- whether it is in the city or the country -that won't leave you broke in the process.
Yet, it need a second edition, more like a 1940's Scout manual with photos, diagrams, drawings, photo list of a personal bug-out bag, car kit, and retreat kit. It also forgot a heavy constuction wheelbarrow, a foldable deer cart, and cast iron two burner (propane). I am rereading this book for a second time. A good choice for one's personal survival library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST read - Lots of research and great lists October 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
What a super book! I am SO glad that I purchased it. I really like that you give real-world examples of situations - they drive the point home and make it PERSONAL. I can see myself stuck in traffic trying to get to my child in school, AND - I actually DID scramble around the basement looking for the water shut off when a pipe burst at 2AM - thankfully the sound of water slapping water woke me! Also, I feel foolish that I didn't think to keep a spare bug-out bag IN MY CAR - Duh! Having the bag at home cannot help me when I am stuck on the road. I really like that you provide so many lists - I am using them as an outline and compiling items as my budget allows. Some of it I knew, some of it I had an idea about, and a good portion of it I hadn't even thought about. YOU are wonderful to pull this together in such a readable and REAL way! You can tell that a lot of research went into writing this book. By breaking a preparedness plan down into manageable chunks, you've made the process do-able for folks without a plan, and have helped me by shining a light on the gaps in my own. I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Resource August 30, 2011
By AKmama
Format:Kindle Edition
This book was excellent! Perfect for our family who is trying to prepare on a budget. The book was filled with step-by-step how to's, which my family really appreciated. Preparing can be a bit overwhelming, especially when trying to accomplish it on a budget, but this book breaks it down into manageable segments that any budget can handle. I would recommend this book without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well thought out and easy to read August 30, 2011
By T-Rex
Format:Kindle Edition
I have been thinking about this subject for about 4 years, but like lots of people, I procrastinated until I read this book. Besides being clever, she keeps the reader entertained with humor. Don't skip by the beginning, as it is very entertaining and "eye opening". The plan is well thought out and well laid out. It is an easy read and packed with good ideas for any person's situation. I would have never thought about some of these things in a disaster situation. Even a small disaster can be devastating to someone not prepared. Because of this book, I have began my preparation. It is slow going, but I feel better because of it. Preparing is not as hard as you might think and can be exhilarating as you begin to see your preparation visualize. If it can be done by a single woman, determined to succeed, it can be done by most of us. This book is well worth the price. I can tell that lots of hard work went into it.
