Great book... blast from the past,

Thought this was a great book. First read the series 20+ years ago when it came out, and then again a few years later. Kind of frozen in the cold war, similar to Red Dawn.... but still a good book.

Like so many, I read this series when I was a teenager back in the early 80s. These series of books along with others like the Traveler and Deadlands were examples of the pulp post apocalyptic serial fiction of the day. They were simple fast reads. Pure entertainment and nothing more. For some strange reason lately I remembered this series and wonder what became of it. I was delighted to see that GraphicAudio created the audio version of this series. Rather than giving you a voice actor reading the book to you, you get an old school audio drama with sound effects and voice actors (yes plural). It was a fun listening experience. There is no way I'd read this series again, this pulp style of fiction is just not my cup of tea 20 years later, but the audio version is a very fun listen. The voice actors are great and I have to give a "hats off" to the actor(s) who voiced Rouke and Rubenstien. I really think they captured the cheesey over-the-top nature of these books and the lead characters especially, Rouke (voiced perfectly for the "over-the-top", self-important, "swaggering" nature of the main character).I have to admit, listening to the character dialogue 20 years later as opposed to reading it makes me laugh at some of the lines the characters deliver. So even if the material hasn't aged gracefully, maybe I'd give it 2 stars, the GraphicAudio folks get 5 stars for their presentation. Well done! A fun listening experience.

The audio book was superb, great background sounds. A few bits of the book were not included so it isn't a true one for one, but it is a very close version and fully acceptable. Worth getting the set for I think, although the two boxed sets are quite expensive at present.

I had loved this series as a boy...I was delighted to find this audio version! Narration combined with actors performing the character voices and mixed with fantastic sound f/x makes this an incredible literary experience!

Even if you have read the series books you have to listen to these presentations of Mr. Ahern's work. The sound effects and use of different actors for each character make the CDs worth listening to. The production does the details Ahern places into his work justice. My wife is now hooked on the series on CD also. It similar to listening to an old radio show. Its a good change to one actor just reading the text.
