Entertaining and thrashy at it's best.......,
By Richard M. Bailey (cptstern@excite.com) (Washington D.C.) - See all my reviews

Easily the best produced album for Nuclear Assault. These thrasher pioneers put out their best work on this album. Intense guitars (not too flashy) with pounding drum work by Glenn Evans (very underrated drummer). I wish the rest of N.A.'s albums had this type of sound production. This is still one of my favorite albums along with Game Over and Slayer's - Reign in Blood. Long live thrash metal.....

This one IS one of the "all time greatest!!!",
By
This review is from: Survive (Audio CD)
If you are into thrash/speed/death metal, THIS ONE IS A MUST!!! Nuclear Assault has their own style, and this one is the Mona Lisa of that. This one IS up there with Reign in Blood, Bonded by Blood, Peace Sells (but who..."cares?"- haha), Darkness Descends, etc., etc..Survive is even far better than Among the Living, and anyone who knows Anthrax AT ALL "knows" that this is Anthrax's very best. So if that doesn't tell you about this recording, then I guess "nothing will." In short, Sony HAD to take this one out of print because NO ONE WAS BUYING ANYTHING ELSE- therefore making it where Sony had this huge stockpile of The Plague, Game Over, etc., and "couldn't sell any of them." All anyone wanted was Survive, which is why it's out of print now, and now we are having to fight like starving dogs to get it on Ebay, because no one can get it anywhere else!- I even talked to Glenn Evans about this, and HE even had to buy it off of Ebay for $50!!! "Believe it or not!" Before I take off, Handle with Care is just short of Survive, BUT THERE IS ONLY "1" SURVIVE!!! (like there is only 1 Reign in Blood, and I think we all know that Slayer wont beat that one ever again, "let alone equal it") Til next time....

Nuclear Assault's best along with "Handle with care". Back in a day i get this gem on cassette, but now is out of print and the only copies around expense your wallet. This group shows their talent here, with chaotic thrashing riffs, with the characterictic hardcore influence. The vocals are impresive. So this record is history, get it!!

Re-Release this alblum NOW!!!!,
By ShadowCoyote@msn.com (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews

This is one of the best alblums Nuclear Assault has ever made. Unfortunately it is out of print. The songs on this alblum represent the golden years of thrash metal. I purchased it in cassette form when it first came out and it has been worn out and I wish to replace it with a cd. Also other good titles are "Handle with care", and the EP "fight to be free". Both are not even listed and these were also great LP/EP. The song brainwashed has also been aired on MTV (Headbangers Ball) during the 80's.

One of the top five best metal albums ever,
By A Customer
This review is from: Survive (Audio CD)
This is the best album by one of metal's greatest bands. The songs range from mosh to total hardcore. "Fight to Be Free" is an all-time classic. The lyrics are great. I wore out two cassettes of this album before finding it new on CD a few months ago (I got very, very lucky). If it's back in print, grab it as fast as you can!

One of the most overlooked metal albums of all time.,
By
This review is from: Survive (Audio CD)
Nuclear Assault's "Survive" is the one of the most underated and overlooked metal albums of all time. During the late 1980's it got lost in the glut of all these wanna be poser hair bands as well as being overshadowed by the likes of Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth. From listening to it is like getting hit over the head with a sledgehammer. It's too bad it's still out of print and costs an arm and a leg for a used copy. I've bought my out of print copy off here for $60.00 and to me it's worth every penny. I keep my copy of Survive in a secret place under lock and key (he! he!)! I've seen Nuclear Assault live 3x when they got back together at various metalfests and let me tell you they blew the roof off the goddamn place! NA falls into the same category as Sacred Reich as one of the most overlooked and underated metal bands of all time. Both bands are similar with similar subject material and now have CDs that are out of print with their used ones costing an arm and a leg. Happy Hunting Folks!

One of the best metal albums of 1988!,
By Zander Haberstaft (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Survive (Audio CD)
It's sad that the kids these days grow up thinking that Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer was where all the good Thrash was back in the good old days. If you take the best of all the out of print Thrash there is, it easily overwhelms these four bands careers by several fold. Enter: Nuclear Assault. One of the forgotten (not here) East Coast giants of metal.Having already the successful '85 demo "Back With a Vengeance", 1986's full length album "Game Over" and The '87 EP "The Plague", Nuclear Assault was off to the races. 1988 and 1989 would mark the two most sucessful years of their career. "Survive" has the classic N.A. Thrash/Hardcore sound produced very well by famed Randy Burns. Every song on here that is a serious song is great (there are some silly interludes as with any Assault record). The guitars of Bramante and Connelly are excellent with some great riffs and some dual solo work which works well (see the solo on F-Sharp). The drumming of Glenn Evans is as brutal as ever and is probably the best drumming on any Nuclear Assault album. The bass is mixed in well so you can always hear it well...and it is thunderous and fat sounding. Would you expect anything less from Lilker? The one draw back is Connelly's vocals sound very much like a rabid hyenia on this record; his vocals go from a clean mid-range hollering to a piercing high of "AHHHHHHH!!!!" Sounded better on "Game Over". You don't know jack about Thrash if you don't own this album. Think it ends at Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill, Exodus, or Testament? Think again. Best songs: Rise from the Ashes, F-Sharp, Fight to Be Free, and Equal Rights. To top it all off, there is a cover of Led Zepplin's "Good Times Bad Times" -worth the price of admission alone.

well way back in the 80s when trash metal was a dime a dozen there where very few bands that could hold my interest.this i one of the truely best albums of that decade!!a band that combines raw power with awesome musicmanship and great songs to just thrash to.one of the best bands live i have ever seen to this day.... these guys also had a message with great lyric content(from songs about substance abbuse to anti war anthems) and a really good sence of humor buy doing a really fun cover of good times bad times(zepplin)at the time no one could match there intensity even the great metallica had a hard time keeping up.there sound was like no one elses and there production of an album still stands the test of time..so when you find this out there pick it up .i was lucky to find a copy at a used record store in my town.some one who had that abum is just missing out you should not make the same mistake...find and buy buy buy...

A hard-to-find, but very good thrash record,
By Broken Window (Dallas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Survive (Audio CD)
Only true classics deserve 5 stars, whereas only corporate drivel deserves 1 star, like a Britney Spears album. The highly sought after 'Survive' by thrash also-rans Nuclear Assault is a very good thrash record. Three and a half stars. One thing that may have held back Nuclear Assault is that they never had any "catchy" hit, perhaps because John Connelly's scratchy vocals just aren't good enough for most people. I happen to like them and they are certainly a cut above most thrash bands (he doesn't growl or anything), but I realize they are an acquired taste. My favorite track on the album, which was also released with a video, is 'Brainwashed'. It has a really cool riff and great, unrelenting energy. I even like the lyrics, LOL! Funny, most reviewers here don't seem to like this song that much. This is a classic thrash anthem. The record has other highlights: 'Rise from the Ashes', 'Great Depression', and even 'Survive', 'Fight to be Free' and 'F#' are pretty good. There are some soft spots: 'Human Rights' is pure speed metal but with an average riff and completely incomprehensible singing. 'Wired' and 'Technology' are unremarkable. Overall the record is a solid listening experience, where even the weaker songs are decent. It has some pretty killer solos and impressive rhythm section. Another plus is that the tunes don't all sound the same; there are a lot of different song structures. This record is 31 minutes long, but I'd say this quick turnover is desirable because, save for 'Rise from the Ashes' and 'Brainwashed', there's nothing really catchy here. The album requires a lot of repeated listens to pick up all the melodies. Due to the general high quality of songs here this is a must buy for thrash fans. One can get this CD for about $25 on eBay, if you are patient. But this is no 'Ride the Lightning' and should be treated as such. Casual metal listeners and general music fans should probably borrow it from a friend first and listen to it for a while to see if they like it. |
