Book Description

January 12, 2001 Bible for Life

Jesus answered this troubling question on the eve of His death with some of the most poignant, powerful teaching in His entire ministry. During those hours, He taught His apostles and, consequently, all believers throughout history, How to Survive In a World of Unbelievers.

Respected pastor, teacher, and author John MacArthur, plumbs the depths of Jesus' final words of encouragement to us, based on John 13-16. By studying this valuable book, you will find answers to these and other difficult questions:

  • How can you remain pure-hearted and spiritually sound in a church seemingly full of hypocrites?
  • How do you help your children stay morally pure when they want to "fit in" with school friends who prefer objectionable activites?
  • How can you keep your family anchored to Christ in a society that is drifting far away from His teaching on family issues, such as divorce, homosexuality and abortion?
  • How do you retain your Christian ethics when you boss asks you to lie or cheat?
  • How can you keep your life focused on glorifying Christ in a society that proclaims self, pride, and personal achievement as marks of success?

4.0 out of 5 stars Not really a "How To" book , but interesting info, June 11, 2001
This review is from: How To Survive In A World Of Unbelievers (Paperback)
This book is not quite the type of Christian living book that the title implies.

It has a ton of great info, background, and information about the last night of Jesus, before the crucifixion, and this book really expounds on the Last Supper according to the Gospel; but this book seems to be only about 25% writing about contemporary Christian living applications.

The title and subtitle of this book should be reversed, to read, "Jesus' Words of Encouragement on the Night Before HIS Death - (and How to Survive in a World of Unbelievers)."

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving the Lord More, April 23, 2001

This review is from: How To Survive In A World Of Unbelievers (Paperback)
John chapters 13-17 are some of the most intimate times between Christ and His Disciples. After Judas left the group, Christ shared some of the most beautiful and wonderful truths and promises found in scripture. This book brings those out in a magnificent way.

If you've ever been on a team or coached a team, you may have been aware of the special bond that there is between coach and players. And one of the most special times is the pre-game talk by the coach before the team goes into battle. That is similar to these chapters in the gospel of John.

In MacArthur's wonderful way of expositing, he brings special insight and appreciation for this wonderful passage of scripture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay book, December 9, 2011

I would agree with another reviewer that said that this book is only about 25% application. This book is a decent book, but if you want a better treatment of this subject check out the book "Set Apart" by Kent Hughes. This is nothing against MacArthur as I love his books, and have a dozen or more and usually rate them 5 stars. However this particular book is not one of his better ones.
