If you've worked your way up through the ranks to your first management position, Katy Tynan's new book, "Survive your Promotion: The 90 Day Success Plan for New Managers," is for you. It's a clear no nonsense guide for success. You'll find the book is light on management theory and heavy on nuts and bolts. Additionally, if your company's culture includes promoting from within, put this book on your must read list.

Surviving your promotion is laid out in 5 parts: Motivation, Mindset, Method, Measurement, and Momentum. Don't you love alliteration?

The meat of the book is in Part 3 where Katy maps out monthly strategies for success. Month one is get to know your internal team. Month two focuses on success strategies with customers and vendors. And finally, month three explains vision and goal setting.

Parts 4 and 5 are a surprising value to the book. She covers things like conducting performance reviews, hiring, dealing with conflict and more.

Finally, the end of the book has several pages of print and internet resources for those needing more information.

Katy communicates ideas like:

* Management is about people.
* Building relationships with your team enhances your ability to retain high performers.
* Don't expect to succeed as a manager like you did as an individual.
* Use the IROD framework for meetings. (Issues, Results, Options, Decisions)

I read this book in three settings and I'm glad it's on my shelf. I give it two thumbs up as a practical roadmap to success for newly promoted managers.

Ms. Tynan is successful in bringing to the new manager a concise synopsis of an otherwise overwhelming topic - how to manage effectively! Most new managers tend to focus on what is within their comfort zone to make an early impact. Many struggle to move outside of their comfort zone to be truly effective managers. Survive Your Promotion gives real, practical examples and tools to help new managers get a grip on ALL that is important when starting their new journey.

Some of the concepts include:

* motivating, leading and managing people - including hiring and dealing with conflict
* how to lead meetings effectively
* how to best leverage your time
* how to think like an owner
* building a vision and mission statement
* setting goals and evaluating results
* among other valuable insights

This book is packed with tools and resources that will help a new manager get started making a great impression quickly. From tactical execution to big picture thinking - this is a must have resource for any new manager. Also a great refresher for managers who have been doing it for a while.

A new job comes with a higher paycheck, but there's also more stress for your buck. "Survive Your Promotion!: The 90 Day Success Plan for New Managers" is a guide for those who have attained new careers and want to succeed at them rather than be quickly used up and spit back out by the harsh difficulties of management. Time management, strategies to motivate others, Katy Tynan gives readers a fine list of thoughts and ideas to make their debut as managers strong ones. "Survive Your Promotion!" is a top pick for any new manager.

I most admire the author for respective her reader's time. Most authors these days have about 5 pages worth of information, which they take 200-300 pages to convey. Katy does a great job of being productive and useful from first page and up to the very end. Some very useful lessons and pointers for new managers. More than anything it highlights the multitude of areas that a person needs to take into consideration as a manager versus as an individual contributor. The book can definitely help in developing an understanding of what one is up against and even have a plan for it. However, the book also suggests, appropriately so, some desired behaviors, which, if not already part of one's repertoire, can be fairly challenging to master even to a basic level. The plan is good, information is great, however, the success really depends on the reader's ability and conviction to execute, which a book can influence or inspire only so much.
