Book Description

Unfair circumstances can shake our lives and even our faith. The situations themselves are hard enough to deal with, but then we wonder why God allowed them. If he’s in control, why are our lives such a mess? This study looks at the lives of Jeremiah, Jonah, Joseph, Paul and Job and how they survived their personal disasters. It challenges you to think through the “why?” questions and see God in a fresh way. You’ll take another look at failure and refine your definition of it. You’ll catch a glimpse of the invisible when you view ordinary events from God’s perspective. Thinking through these issues can give you fresh purpose in life, hope for the future, and a roadmap to moving past unfairness. This Bible study is designed to be a companion book to Edges of Truth: The Mary Weaver Story, the true story of an innocent woman accused of murdering a baby she cared for. It helps to answer the questions that Mary’s story raises. This 10-week study is designed for group Bible studies or personal reflection. Each chapter gives 5 daily readings from the Bible with comments and questions that can be used as personal devotions.

"I Survived" is a great 10-week Bible study about dealing with life's trials. This study helped me gain better perspective on understanding unfairness and dealing with personal spiritual disasters. It helped me to understand that even the toughest things we go through are necessary for our spiritual growth - and sometimes we might need those experiences later so we can help and comfort others going through similar circumstances.

I especially enjoyed chapter 7, where they brought out this idea that God uses these trials to build our spiritual muscle. Like an athlete training for a race, how can I expect to get stronger and build endurance unless my coach pushes my limits? "Shortcuts and escape routes won't build the stamina you'll need to complete the course."

This study came at just the right time in my life, and would be very helpful for anyone who is faced with a personal loss or just trying to make sense of suffering.

This is a Bible study guide that goes with "Edges of Truth" also written by Deb Brammer. This study of the trials faced by Joseph, Job, Jeremiah, Jonah and Paul could also be used on its own. I used it as a daily devotional book for a few weeks. As I went through the Scripture readings and assignments, I had the thought that these companion books could be used for a book reading discussion group at church. The women in our church plant in Australia have had such a group in the past using other books. I know of other churches here that have done the same. Next time we have a book reading group, I will suggest we use "I Survived" along with "Edges of Truth".

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful study June 5, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I Survived encourages readers to think about tragedy, defeat and unfairness through the lens of Scripture by studying from the lives of Joseph, Job, Jeremiah, Jonah and Paul.

Because I know the Brammers personally, I know they have faced trials themselves and ministered to family and friends facing tragic circumstances. Art and Deb deal with the issues raised in the book in a thoughtful way. They do not try to give pat answers where the Bible is silent.

Each chapter has five short assignments: some Scripture to read, a place to write a response and a page or two of relections from the authors.

The companion book is an amazing, true story of a woman who faced unjust first-degree murder charges. But the books can stand alone. I Survived has some great thoughts processing trials Biblically.
