From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-In this fictional pictorial diary, 10-year-old Jesse Adams records his travels from Iowa to Oregon with his Ma, Pa, sisters, and other pioneers. Day one is April 29, 1852, and 2000 miles of unknown, dangerous territory lay ahead. Free land, opportunity, and adventure motivate the intrepid travelers and sustain the Adams family and their companions. The format is oversized with full-color photographs of actors modeling authentic 19th-century costumes, artifacts, and realia. Recipes, songs, and illustrations fill the colorful pages. Readers are drawn into the action of the day with its dangers, disease, sorrow, anticipation, and excitement. "Home at Last," says it all; Oregon City is like Paradise-a new cabin and a good night's sleep in a real bed. A three-page foldout map shows Jesse's travels, marking the major areas and locations of the various Indian tribes. Visual learners will benefit greatly, and the possibilities for dramatic interpretations are limitless.
