More About the Author

Lauren Tarshis often wonders how she came to spend most of her waking moments thinking about disasters, as the author of the children's historical fiction series "I Survived." Each book takes readers into the heart of history's most thrilling and terrifying events, including the sinking of the Titanic, the Shark Attacks of 1916, Hurricane Katrina, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the San Francisco earthquake, 9/11, and the Battle of Gettysburg. Writing these books often makes her feel very nervous, as though at any moment a volcano could erupt right outside her window. Then again, she has learned a thing or two about avoiding being eaten by a shark.
Lauren is also the author of the the award-winning Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree and its sequel, Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell in Love.

I really enjoyed this book. The setting of this book is in San Francisco, California in 1906 during the earthquake while President Roosevelt was in office. The main characters of the book are Leo, Morris, Wilkie, and Fletch.
Leo was a kind boy because he never hurt anybody and he never picked a fight. Leo lived in a boardinghouse with his father until he passed away. His Father always told stories about his grandpop which gave him courage. His grandfather passed a golden nugget to his father who passed the nugget to him.
Morris was a nice and annoying kid. He was a tall skinny kid. He asked a bunch of questions and always had a bunch of facts to share even when Leo didn't want to hear them. He lived with his uncle who gambled away all their money and was hardly ever home.
Wilkie was a fat kid and a bully. He bullied everybody. He stole money, watches, and other treasures from people. He went to jail and wasn't afraid of the police.
Fletch was a bully and a wingman to Wilkie. Together they made an unstoppable team of bullies.
Leo had a gold nugget that Wilkie and Fletch stole. In the dark, Leo disgused himself as the ghost of Corey Drew in order to get his nugget back from the bullies. It almost worked until Morris showed up and ruined everything. Then the bullies started to beat them up until the great earthquake began! Fletch ran and left them in the building. Leo and Morris had to help Wilkie escape because he was stuck. They were barely able to get out of the building. Once they got out, they saw fire everywhere and people were crying. Wilkie realized that his buddy had left him to die so he decided to help Leo and Morris get the gold nugget.
They had to go through the burning alley to get to the nugget inside the boardinghouse.

My son is a 4th grader who reads on grade level, but hates to read. If given a choice he will choose Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Snoopy. I'm a reading teacher and I wanted him to try other genres and more chapter books. I found this series and he loved them. He begged me to buy them all. He would still rather play than read, but when it is reading time, he doesn't fuss if he has one of his, " I survived.." books. I now recommend them to all of his friend's parents.

I love how these books take tragic events and kid-ify them to make them less heavy and easier to read. I just wish that the books were longer, that's the only thing.
And that the books kind of strayed away from the whole earthquake plot. There was more bullying stuff going on than earthquake events. But it was still great. But if you're looking for a super education, fact-crammed book then you might want to keep looking because this may not be the one.

NOTE: I believe the other ones front really do this.

My 10 year old son is not really a reader. He doesn't like to read fictional stories so when I found these it was the next best thing. Learning about history while he reads it as a story. It's caught his interest and he now has the entire set with the newest one on pre-order and said to be mailed in Jan. 2013. I would recommend these books

My kid is 8 and loves to read these books, he likes that they have a "real" aspect to them...he is an extremely picky reader and it is so hard to find books that he likes to read, so I am amazed he loves to read this set of books, there has not been one yet from the series that he has not thoroughly enjoyed!

Just like all the other I survived books, my son has gobbled them up within an hour or so. I've never read them myself so I can't testify to how graphic they are but just wanted to pass along that my son totally approves.
