Editorial Reviews

From the Author

"There are no guarantees in life, but after any major disaster two separate and distinct groups will emerge - the Prepared and the Unprepared. It's up to you which group you'll belong to. As far as I'm concerned, the ultimate measure of this book's success will be how many people it can help guide into the "Prepared group."

-Richard Duarte

From the Back Cover

"The nice thing about failing to plan is that failure comes as a complete surprise and is not preceded by long periods of worry or concern."

I have lived in South Florida for 29 years. I lived through Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma in 2005. I wish I had read Surviving Doomsday before those events. Learning from experience is good but having a guide like this book sure makes disaster planning easier. The book is well thought out and practical. Some of the suggestions seem so common sense yet I had not thought of them. Duarte's detailed lists are now part of my check lists for future preparation. Many readers may have never experienced an extreme scenario requiring the disaster preparation described in this book. However, the proverbial ounce of prevention certainly makes sense in this day and age of terrorism, super storms and aging infrastructure. A disaster can take many forms. Incorporating as many of the book's suggestions as possible will make a difference in the subsequent survival phase of such a disaster.

Surviving Doomsday: A Guide for Surviving an Urban Disaster is a great manual for preparation in the event of a nautral disaster or even civil unrest. The author is thorough in his explanations in a variety of areas including first-aid and firearms. Having lived in Florida for over forty years, I experienced Hurricane Andrew first hand. This storm took South Florida by suprise as utilities such as electricity and water were unavailable for days, including weeks in the hardest hit areas. This book will help prepare an individual for the worst. The elements contained in this book would have made coping with the natural disaster much more manageable. One does not need to be a survivalist to understand and exectue the elements and concepts depicted in this book. Surviving Doomsday: A Guide for Surviving an Urban Disaster is an excellent addition to anyone's collection and should be read by all.

This book is very thorough in its coverage of what to do in a "Worst Case Scenario." Mr. Duarte is very honest and objective about the difference between reading his book - or any book - and actually DOING SOMETHING! As a martial arts instructor who thinks about this type of thing on a regular basis, I believe Surviving Doomsday does a great job of taking everything into consideration - separating "maybe" from "probably from "definitely." Too often, martial arts and firearms experts, as well as experts in other fields, fall into the trap of believing - and unfortunately TEACHING - that what they're pedaling is "all you need." It's just not so. Duarte has done his research though, and in my opinion, hits the nail on the head about issues that are variable and others that are 100% definite in nature. He's not pedaling anything except survival, so there are no hidden agendas here. Just read the book - you'll see what I'm talking about....

Whether you're a casual prepper or a die-hard post-apocalyptic survivalist, this book is your go-to guide for preparation for disaster in an urban environment.

The book is the perfect length/size for the content being delivered.. The author provides concise explanations and descriptions of each area of survival discussed (it doesn't have that "fluff" feel that most books have when authors try to just ADD pages). The book layout is situated in a way that it flows very well and doesn't feel choppy. It's easy to tell that the author put some good thought into this before beginning to write it.

Here's the BIG takeaways from the book:

1) It's written in a manner that makes it easy for the beginner, but it covers areas that will surely surprise the advanced prepper.

2) It covers nearly all possible scenarios for an urban disaster, and discusses the DOs and DON'Ts of each.

3) IF NOTHING ELSE, THE "SHOPPING LIST" SECTION IS A MUST-READ. It covers every necessary item that you would ever have to have in a disaster situation.

*This one definitely gets placed in my Must-Haves stack, alongside "SAS Survival Handbook" and a couple others.

The introduction alone is enough to make you sit up and think. A must read by any young adult who has grown up in the world of electronic gizmos. I only brushed over the section on guns, here in Australia the way of life is a lot different I guess. Was very interested in the section on water sanitation and the section on food storage was written in a very common sense way. I would like to see further reading though on human nature during times of crisis, reading people I think would be very useful.

This book gets you thinking about what events might happen and also prepares you for them. This is not like all the dooms-day prepper books, it is for the everyday man/ woman. It gives you a lot of advise so you don't become a victim like the many people who thought "That Sandy isn't coming to New Jersey". I have yet to stop reading and using the tips about being prepared before the event happens. This is a must read/ Must have Book!
