Editorial Reviews

Once the happiest season of all, the daunting days between Thanksgiving and New Years often end with a hangover, a potbelly, and enough credit-card debt to make our heads spin. In SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS WITH LEWIS BLACK, the Curmudgeon of Comedy Lewis Black returns to HISTORY to make sense of the 36-day marathon of stress that consumes us all. Armed with history, humor and his trademark ranting, the ever-acerbic Lewis takes a comedic look at how to survive the month-long festival of consumption without losing your mind. Watch as Lewis consults experts in holiday history, anxiety and gift giving, and explores the meaning of Kwanzaa, the history of Chanukah, and the real Saint Nicholas. He will interview turkeys on a turkey farm, do a stint as a department store Santa and investigate why we drink on New Years Eve. Fellow comedians, including Bob Saget, Craig Ferguson, Joy Behar, and David Alan Grier, weigh in on the anxiety-inducing holiday season and offer survival tips of their own.

5.0 out of 5 stars This got me through the Holiday Season Last Year. October 24, 2010
Last year The History Channel aired this special during the holiday season. I never laughed so hard. Lewis Black is one of the smartest, funniest comics around today and his take on the horrors of the holidays is delightfully crazy and all too true. No one is safe. If you don't recognize your own family or yourself in this hilarious truth telling, you are missing a funny bone. This is 94 minutes of Holiday Snark at its best. Thank you, Lewis!

3.0 out of 5 stars Surviving the Holidays, Lewis Black January 28, 2011

This was not what I expected. I am a true fan of Lewis Black but, there was an assortment of other comedians who contributed to the DVD and not the usual Lewis Black rants. I was disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the real thing January 1, 2011

Before buying this as a Christmas gift for my wife, I read several negative reader's comments. We're both big Lewis Black fans though, so I thought aw, heck - how bad can it be. Well, pretty bad from where I stand. The issue is that it's mostly not Lewis Black. It's a whole bunch of other people - some famous, some less so - talking about a variety of holiday events. It's only narrated by Lewis Black, who gets in just a few lines of his own on the whole DVD.
My wife said she still enjoyed it, but for me, it wasn't what I thought I was buying.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing... December 29, 2010
I am a fan of Lewis Black's stand-up comedy, so was happy to receive this as a Christmas present. I got about 30 minutes into the DVD when I realized that I hadn't laughed once, hadn't chuckled, and hadn't even cracked a smile.
EJECT!
Lewis Black's stand-up comedy is hilarious. But this DVD isn't Lewis Black's comedy.
He's interviewing other comedians, then he forces a laugh at their not-very-funny responses.
This DVD was very poor...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for that Grouchy Santa April 23, 2014

Lewis Black is GREAT on this. Probably won't like it if your Christmas MUST be "carols around the hearth" and "cider by the yule log". But, if you know someone who enjoys Lewis Black's comedy, this is a perfect stocking stuffer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lew Is Lew April 21, 2014

If you're expecting anything light and fluffy, well, I think you're going to be disappointed. Funny man with many issues. At least his parents are proud of him. Might rub any of the religious fringe the wrong way by quite a bit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let the season begin December 30, 2013

When I realized someone had lifted my original copy I nearly went all Lewis Black on the kiddies. This telling of the season is without a doubt the best way to start things off. All the other comedians add such depth to the program and Lewis is there to get every ounce of laughter out of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Holidays are Humorous
This is mild compared to Black's other productions. But then, I expected it. A lot of other comedians grace this production. The humor is fairly mild. Read more

I almost wet my pants at several different parts. I vaguely remember when it aired originally on the History Channel. I'm glad I stumbled upon it.
