Beautiful and Touching Book about Life in Iraq,
By Reader from Northeast (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Surviving Love in War: The enduring love for my country, freedom, democracy, and the love for a man (Paperback)
This book reads like a journal, where one experiences the joys, sorrows, and disillusionment of an American girl who goes to Iraq naïve and returns wise beyond her years. If ever one wants to have a deep understanding of what life was like in Iraq during war-time, this is the book to read. M.A.Cary has the rare ability to describe her world in a way which enables her readers to vicariously experience her surroundings and emotions while at the same time gaining insights impossible to obtain by someone who has never been to Iraq. I highly recommend this book and give it a 5-star rating.

Tough love,
This review is from: Surviving Love in War: The enduring love for my country, freedom, democracy, and the love for a man (Paperback)
This is a terrific read with a unique perspective. But, first, a disclaimer. I know Misti and worked with her in Iraq to a very limited extent. We reviewed each others manuscripts. Having said that, I also can say that in the vast and mounting literature on the subject, this account stands apart. It is deeply human. It reveals not only of the yearnings of an idealist who went to Iraq to support reconstruction but also the personal fears and frustrations that became part of every civilian's everyday life there. Misti's narrative shows her to be one of those whose successes were important, although they ofter were checked by the violence and incompetence inherent in the occupation. She never gave in or gave up. Her perspective as a woman in man's world is not duplicated elsewhere in its straightforward ability to show vulnerability and resilience in equal measure. This book should be on the shelves of any who care at all about Iraq, Iraqis, America's role in the Middle East, or even love.

Surviving Love In War,
This review is from: Surviving Love in War: The enduring love for my country, freedom, democracy, and the love for a man (Paperback)
This is truly a remarkable book. War from a woman's perspective, and true life experience. How different and unique this book is from anything I have ever read. I never thought I would enjoy a book about war but I did enjoy this book for many reasons. This was a real eye opener for me. It's a blend of real life situations including, romance, history, losses, shatter lives, hope, faith, and facts that we have not been made aware of by our own government, and media. I thought all CNN reports showed the same thing about us all over the world. After so many tragic losses her faith is renewed almost magically when right in the middle of a war zone appears a golden rose. How wonderful, romantic, nostalgic, fitting, and all most unbelievable. Yet what a sad situation for anyone to be in. With hope, and an unending faith this woman concludes that all that was taken away by war will be restored for her. I believe she is right. I hope all parents and relatives, and loved ones including friends and neighbors find truth, and hope in this book if they have been touched by this war in Iraq or any other war. Now I understand why people don't just come back home, and get back to their normal life. What a process it must be to be reintegrated back into our beautiful America.Answers To A Mother's Prayer - Knowledge & Faith |
