Book Description

August 29, 2000
Stalking may seem like something that happens only to celebrities. In fact, it is an overlooked, yet extremely prevalent form of domestic violence--far more widespread than many people suppose. Now journalist Linden Gross provides all the necessary tools readers need to know to handle inappropriate obsessive attention. Readers will discover how to control their natural reactions (which often put victims at a disadvantage), how to stop feeding the obsessive interaction that perpetuates stalking situations, and how to protect their privacy and safety. Gross explains how these dangerous obsessions begin, the patterns they take, and what potential victims can do before the nightmare becomes real. Surviving a Stalker also draws on the expertise of psychologists and offers secrets from personal security professionals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supportive and sustaining, January 28, 2001

This review is from: Surviving a Stalker: Everything You Need to Know to Keep Yourself Safe (Paperback)
Anyone who's been the victim of unwanted attention can relate to the stories in this book - some are truly horrendous, but knowledge IS power, and I definitely felt more empowered after reading this book! The bad news is that there frequently are no easy answers - the GOOD news is that you are not alone and the answers, though not easy, DO EXIST! Although I prefer Gavin deBecker's book THE GIFT OF FEAR, this book is a welcome addition to increasing one's information resources and sense of protection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something Everyone Should Know, February 14, 2007

This book has a lot of useful information, and is good to have even when you're not being stalked. It helps you see how the stalker thinks, and how to protect yourself, your family, co-workers and friends. There is another book that would work well with this, that keeps things a little more updated - Stalking the Stalker. In general, most women don't realize that not being clear and concise with their wishes because of discomfort levels can lead to even more problems later on. This book should also be read with The Gift of Fear by Gavin deBecker. I highly recommend it in the process of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe!

I think that one should make their decisions according to their situation, but being aware of possible repercussions from things like restraining orders, etc. is an important part of a decision.

There are far more books on stalking than there needs to be. Potential victims need three things from a book on stalking. 1. Help recognizing the threat. Most victims of stalking don't recognize the threat until it's too late. This book does a pretty good job of helping potential victims recognize a would-be stalker before he has the chance become fully involved. 2. Help understanding how to minimize the threat. Folks need to understand what can be done to reduce the threat of becoming a victim. There are some great tips on how to do this. Some are simple and easy and some are pretty complex and involved. The list of steps seems pretty complete. 3. Practical steps to stop a stalker. The steps listed in this book are at least as good as they are in any other. Stopping a determined stalker can be a daunting challenge and I don't think anyone has all the answers. Gross has as good a list of steps as we can hope for.

The real strength of this book is in the organization. Each chapter has a short synopsis at the end. It makes it easy to answer the question, "So, what should I do?" Bottom line, it's pretty well written, has some great information, and it is well organized - almost like a manual. As a teacher of women's self defense seminars, I recommend only one book on stalking. This is it.
