Anyone who's been the victim of unwanted attention can relate to the stories in this book - some are truly horrendous, but knowledge IS power, and I definitely felt more empowered after reading this book! The bad news is that there frequently are no easy answers - the GOOD news is that you are not alone and the answers, though not easy, DO EXIST! Although I prefer Gavin deBecker's book THE GIFT OF FEAR, this book is a welcome addition to increasing one's information resources and sense of protection.

This book has a lot of useful information, and is good to have even when you're not being stalked. It helps you see how the stalker thinks, and how to protect yourself, your family, co-workers and friends. There is another book that would work well with this, that keeps things a little more updated - Stalking the Stalker. In general, most women don't realize that not being clear and concise with their wishes because of discomfort levels can lead to even more problems later on. This book should also be read with The Gift of Fear by Gavin deBecker. I highly recommend it in the process of keeping yourself and your loved ones safe!

I think that one should make their decisions according to their situation, but being aware of possible repercussions from things like restraining orders, etc. is an important part of a decision.

Through many personal stories, the plight of the victims of stalking and abuse is put into the forefront. Through their struggles and personal sacrifices, we've learned to protect ourselves from a stalker' s violent wrath.

This is a crime that has taken on new life and is more and more prevalent throughout society in general. Anyone, from little kids, to older adults, can fall prey to these sick individuals and may not even know it for a while. We have the celebrity stalkings, John Lennon, who was assassinated by his stalker, Chapman, Ronald Reagan, a victim of the obsession Hinckley had for Jodi Foster, Rebecca Schafer, the victim of Robert Bardo, Teresa Saldana, victim of a Scottish maniac who has vowed to finish the job when he gets out of prison, then we have the regular folk, who would have remained unknown had their paths not been intercepted by stalkers. Forward by Gavin de Becker, who write the excellent and potentially life saving book, the Gift of Fear. HIGHLY recommended, fascinating read.

There are far more books on stalking than there needs to be. Potential victims need three things from a book on stalking. 1. Help recognizing the threat. Most victims of stalking don't recognize the threat until it's too late. This book does a pretty good job of helping potential victims recognize a would-be stalker before he has the chance become fully involved. 2. Help understanding how to minimize the threat. Folks need to understand what can be done to reduce the threat of becoming a victim. There are some great tips on how to do this. Some are simple and easy and some are pretty complex and involved. The list of steps seems pretty complete. 3. Practical steps to stop a stalker. The steps listed in this book are at least as good as they are in any other. Stopping a determined stalker can be a daunting challenge and I don't think anyone has all the answers. Gross has as good a list of steps as we can hope for.

The real strength of this book is in the organization. Each chapter has a short synopsis at the end. It makes it easy to answer the question, "So, what should I do?" Bottom line, it's pretty well written, has some great information, and it is well organized - almost like a manual. As a teacher of women's self defense seminars, I recommend only one book on stalking. This is it.

This book is very well researched, but it largely consists of horrific true stories of stalkings. I don't know how helpful this will be if you are being stalked.
A lot of the stories chosen are told in a sensational way and doesn't give much hope to victims.
This book was published in 1994 so it's somewhat outdated.
It is an interesting source book for anyone who wants to write about stalkers but I imagine a victim could find a better book about how to protect themselves.
The subtitle "Everything you need to know to kepp yourself safe "is surely nonsense. Mostly the book tells you repeatedly not to get a restraining order because you'll anger your stalker. Perhaps this is true.
If you are a stalker yourself suffering with obsession I strongly suggest you take an antidepressant such as Celexa to relive your suffering and cure you of obsessionality. It really works.
