This review is from: Surviving and Thriving After Losing Your Job: How This Could Be the Best Thing That's Ever Happened to You (Paperback)
David Jones has written one of the most insightful books on the market to help those who have lost their job or are looking at a career change. In these challenging times readers need a book of solutions and practical advice - you will find both in "Surviving and Thriving after Losing Your Job" by strategist David F. Jones. Truthfully, the book has made such an impact with groups I work with I have placed orders for two cases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personal Experience & Practical Advice into Forced Job Transition, May 1, 2009
This review is from: Surviving and Thriving After Losing Your Job: How This Could Be the Best Thing That's Ever Happened to You (Paperback)
Little did David F. Jones realize when he was asked to share his experiences about his recent job transition that Americans would be facing the toughest job market in many decades. In the book Jones shares of being transitioned out of an upper management position; after almost 30 years in the same industry with the same company. Throughout the book we are invited into the personal journey that Jones was forced to take. We get a glimpse of the emotions that filled the days right after receiving the news and the intentional decision to let the `past be the past' and quickly move on.

There is much more to the book than just a personal story because most of it is filled with practical advice that could help anyone with a job search, whether you are recently unemployed or seeking a job for the first time. Included in this advice is: how to prepare a resume, building a network of business relationships, discovering you passions and purpose, and developing a game plan toward your next position.

Practical suggestions for a positive job future run throughout the pages. One that is not business related but repeated often is the author's dependence on God. It is very clear in this book that Jones understands and knows he has a personal relationship with God. So here is a business book that gives practical advice, yet doesn't sell the reader on the fact that it is an all up to `me' approach; but that there is a higher power we can place our trust.

I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars REAL LIFE. REAL ADVICE., April 6, 2009
This review is from: Surviving and Thriving After Losing Your Job: How This Could Be the Best Thing That's Ever Happened to You (Paperback)
It is not every day we can see with such clarity how an individual can navigate the curve balls life can throw you. We can watch his story evolve and walk with the author every step of the way. David Jones has such practical and common sense advice for those who have lost their job. His encouragement gives all of us hope and then a plan to overcome what has happened. I really enjoyed the segment on "how to interview".
Even if you have not lost a job, this book gives you wonderful insights of how to help those who have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Practical Guide for Working through Job Loss and Getting on With Your Career, April 6, 2009
This review is from: Surviving and Thriving After Losing Your Job: How This Could Be the Best Thing That's Ever Happened to You (Paperback)
I thought this book was one of the best practical guides for dealing with the emotions of job loss while offering suggestions for getting on track with your job search. Losing a job is stressful and frustrating, but it can be a great catalyst to finding a new career or a better job. This book delivers a practical step-by-step plan for organizing your job search while including basic information on networking, resume writing and interviewing and other areas. It doesn't strive to be an exhaustive authority on any one of those areas, rather it reaffirms the things you need to do to chart your course. Having a plan and working it is one of the biggest stumbling blocks to people changing careers or looking for work. This book is timely and practical for the economy we are in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Tips While Taking into Account Emotional Landmines of Job Loss, April 6, 2009
This review is from: Surviving and Thriving After Losing Your Job: How This Could Be the Best Thing That's Ever Happened to You (Paperback)
David Jones tells his story of an unimagined job loss with courageous authenticity. He doesn't sidestep the emotional landmines that accompany such a loss; rather, he folds the emotional impact into the strategies he recommends at each step of the "recovery" process. He writes about the necessity of reflection and introspection that accompany the loss of identity, as well as loss of job. This book is honest, thought-provoking and loaded with practical tips for rebounding from loss and strategically positioning one's self for the next phase of life. I am purchasing copies for those whom I coach and for friends. I highly recommend this work.
