This review is from: From Surviving to Thriving: Incest, Feminism, and Recovery (SUNY Series in the Psychology of Women) (Suny Series, Psychology of Women) (Paperback)
I have read several books on the topic of incest survivors and found this a very special one. The author wrote it as a Ph.D. dissertation. Its content is nonjudgemental, supportive and represents a balanced view of a well-educated professional. Does not matter to what degree the incest occurred, the author stresses out full recovery and thriving life is possible as a positive consequence for those who are willing to go through a recovery process and yet another, this time, temporary stage of pain. Caring friends, recovery groups and (even) family are a necessary support for the brave individual willing to give up the pain of the past, reaching for a happier future. Victims of incest do not have to be "scared for life," there is help available. The book could include some references as to help networks or list of professionals specializing in helping incest survivors. I found "Healing" chapter with its subtitles, such as "Acceptance", ! "Telling Others", "Anger" a very helpful in finding out where to start the healing process. I would recommend this book for incest surviors, perpetrators, and health professionals. For survivors to hear that there is hope to live healthy and fulfilling life, for perpetrators to learn what is coming their way from people they abused as children. Beware! And for health professionals as a useful therapy tool. Reading this book takes time (a lot of emotional pain comes out) but it's worth its while. For the very sensitive survivors I recommend talking with a friend or a therapist first. You do not have to go through that pain alone ever again. And realize, you too have a voice. Speak up. The perpetrators are the guilty ones, they rightfully deserve to be spoken about and hated. This book opens reader's eyes that hate is a valid feeling and cannot be repressed forever. Same with anger - it has to come out in order to make place for happiness and healthy! mature life. Eventually the moment will come to make peac! e with the past and move on. The book is a valuable tool. Please, remember, you do not HAVE to go thorugh the recovery pain alone...When equipped with a tool like this book, the survivor has power to reclaim one's own life and live it to the fullest without having to fear the perpetrator ever again.
