3.0 out of 5 stars Good Planets Are No Good!, September 25, 2010
Laurence M. Janifer (1933-2002) was a prolific sci-fi author writing for around fifty years! He wrote under his name, under various pen names and as Mark Phillips joint pseudonym with Randall Garrett.

"Survivor" (1977) is the first novel about Gerald Knave specialist in surviving whatever odds destiny throws him. The author will use this character in four more novels and a score of short stories. It isn't a very good novel IMHO, written in the `70s looks like a standard and not very brilliant from the `50s.

The story is as follows: Gerald Knave is looking for peaceful vacation and chooses Cub IV, a recently colonized world, reputed as lovely and uneventful place.
As soon as he arrives things begin to change, colonist start to be possessed and transformed in almost zombies. Obviously local government call for his help and Gerald obliges.
The book is the chronicle of Knave efforts to discover what's going on and stop it.

The style the author picks is a sort of tongue in cheek, not very enticing, and a fast paced adventure development.

This book is a sample of the simple & adventurous sci-fi with no more goal than keep the reader entertained for a while.
