An entangled and entertaining sequel,

This review is from: The Survivor (Paperback)
While 'The Survivor' can be read as a stand-alone book, I strongly recommend you read the precursor 'The Accident Man' first. It greatly sets the scene as well as being the better book, not that second Sam Carver book is ever dull. The surviving UK and Russian characters from the first book have a score to settle with Sam after he showed them all up in their earlier encounters. With Sam apparently permanently mentally crippled from the after-effects of extreme torture he experienced in the the closing chapters of 'The Accident Man', it appears they have nothing to worry about, but as we've learnt, while Sam is alive, anything can happen and does. A freak survivor from one of Sam's earlier planned accidents learns of the existence of a list containing location and trigger code information for over 100 cold war deployed nuclear suitcase bombs. With only months to live thanks to terminal cancer, he decides to force God's hand to remove His people in the Rapture by triggering Armageddon with a carefully placed nuclear blast. Through clever subterfuge he sets about locating a working bomb and implementing the means to deploy it. USA intelligence agencies belatedly realise the risk to the world and join the Russian and UK players in an exciting race to hunt down the list. The author cleverly interweaves the initiatives from the different players as they all fight for control, so we never know what will happen next. The Russians inadvertently free Sam from his mental prison and he becomes the wild card that pulls all the threads together as he seeks to be reunited with his lost love Alix. Nothing seems to go to plan for any of the players, which makes for an engrossing read as the action moves at a fast and unpredictable pace across Switzerland, the USA, France and Kosovo as we race to the explosive climax.
