Editorial Reviews

Review

“Hunter expertly explores the tensions between responsibility and freedom; risk and safety; and loyalty and acceptance. Viewing the unfolding adventure through Lucky’s eyes makes even the most mundane or familiar seem alive with magic. Wild and wonderful adventure for middle-graders.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“Young readers will find plenty to like here, from the fast-moving plot, to the characterizations of individual dogs. A promising start for the many fans of the Warriors and Seekers adventure series.” (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

The time has come for dogs to rule the wild.

Lucky has always been a Lone Dog, but when the Big Growl strikes, his whole world changes. With enemies at every turn, Lucky knows he can't survive on his own, and he falls in with a Pack. He's not sure he's ready to rely on other dogs—or have them depend on him—but in a dangerous new world, he may not have a choice.

I was apprehensive about the book after reading the first few pages. The voice of the writing is entirely different from the other team of writers that use the Erin Hunter tag name and I wasn't sure how I felt about it. As I read on, however, I became more used to the sound of these new writers and fell into the writing pretty easily. I really like the lore ( Sun-Dog, Forest-Dog, etc ) and it adds a feeling of magic to the story. While the names are sort of silly ( Lucky or Bella, for example ) some of them make sense given that they are pets, not strays. Each character has its own personality though a few fall flat. Overall it's a very good read and I'm looking forward to the next books. However, if you're looking for a dog version of Warriors you're in the wrong place. Come into this book expecting something entirely different and you'll be fine.

I just finished this book, and I was caught into it like a longpaw off guard during the Big Growl. It was a great read, and follows seven dog, six of them trying to get back to their owners, the 7th a stray teaching them to survive on their own because a hurricane drove all their people away. I won't reveal anymore, but this was a great read, and I'm fourteen.

Lucky is the type of dog who prefers being alone. That's the way it's been most of his life; he's responsible for no one except himself and has no one to answer to, especially those bossy humans. He actually pities those dogs who are tied to the end of a leash. Lucky is wild and free, and that's how he wants it to stay.

But that's not what happens when he gets arrested by a dog catcher and thrown into the animal shelter. Sure, he gets food every day, and the humans appear caring and kind, but he still longs for his freedom. Before Lucky can do anything about his situation, the Big Growl strikes the city. The huge earthquake shakes the ground, splits it open and destroys many buildings. Lucky barely escapes the shelter with his life, while others aren't so fortunate. Everything has changed with the Big Growl. Most of the humans are gone, and the dogs left behind will have to care for themselves. Fortunately, Lucky has experience surviving on his own, and even prefers it to living in a dog pack. Still, the rules have changed since the Big Growl, oil has seeped into the rivers, food is more scarce, and buildings topple with the brush of a tail. Still, Lucky is confident that he will be just fine all on his own.

Then he runs into his sister, Bella, and a group of her friends. Lucky and Bella haven't seen each other since they were tiny pups, and she has lived quite a different life from him. Bella and her friends have always been pampered pets, and are completely clueless about living in the wild. Lucky decides he'll stick around for a short while to teach them how to survive, how to find food, water, shelter, and how to watch out for danger; he at least owes his sister that. But Lucky is definitely not interested in becoming part of a dog pack.

Let me start off by saying I am a huge fan of Erin Hunter. I have read ALL of their Warriors books! I haven't read Seekers, but am planning on reading them soon. OKAY, let's get to the review.

Most people are looking for a replacement for Warriors while they are waiting for the new one. Well, if you're looking for a story about warrior cats then you better look somewhere else. I'll admit this book is no Warriors, but I loved it anyways.

Erin Hunter writes AMAZING books, and if you like their other books, then you'll like the writing style to this one. This is basically a story about a dog. After an earthquake, and all the humans are gone, he's lost. He believes he can survive on his own.

He meets a group of dogs, and teaches them how to survive in the wild. He plans to leave them after they get the hang of things.

Does he do it? You'll have to read to find out!

Overall I enjoyed this book and recommend it to you!

Long paws: two legs: humans: which, if u look in the mirror, u will see one. (Hee hee)

Anyway, this book is about a dog named Lucky who lives in the city. There is an earthquake, and all the long paws are gone. Lucky is with his friend Sweet, who a couple chapters later, leaves to find her Pack. By the way, Lucky is a lone dog, which means that he is wild but does not live with a pack. Lucky finds his long lost sis, Bella, and her Leashes dog friends, who lost their owners. He tries to teach them how to survive in the Wild and become a pack. He succeeds, and they get better. He leaves them, to become a lone dog once more, even though it breaks his heart. Does he go back to his Beloved Buddies? U read & find out!
I am a warriors fan and have read ALL of them. This was a good read, was not as good as warriors. I did not fall into the book like I did in warriors, but I recommend this to warriors and dog fans alike.
May Starclan light your Path...
