Excerpt from book: A great sheet of water, supplied continuously by the pumps, was rolling in tiny wavelets, and escaping now to starboard, now to larboard through the scupper-holes. After watching the men for a while as they ran about barefooted, I could not resist the desire to join them, so taking off my shoes and stockings, I proceeded to dabble in the flowing water. Great was my amazement to find the deck perfectly hot to my feet! Curtis heard my exclamation of surprise, and before I could put my thoughts into words, said,— " Yes! there is fire on board !" "YE5! THERE IS FIRE ON BOARD." Pan 34. 'THE MEN ON WATCH NOTICED A SLIOHT SMOKE ISSUING FROM THE URGE HATCHWAY." Pf 35- CHAPTER IX. October igt/i.—Everything, then, is clear. The uneasiness of the crew, their frequent conferences, Owen's mysterious words, the constant scourings of the deck and the oppressive heat of the cabins which had been noticed even by my fellow-passengers, all are explained. After his grave communication, Curtis remained silent. I shivered with a thrill of horror; a calamity the most terrible that can befall a voyager stared me in the face, and it was some seconds before I could recover sufficient composure to inquire when the fire was first discovered. " Six days ago," replied the mate. " Six days ago!" I exclaimed; "why, then, it was that night." " Yes," he said, interrupting me; " it was the night you heard the disturbance upon deck. The men on watch noticed a slight smoke issuing from the large hatchway and immediately called Captain Huntly and myself. Wefound beyond all doubt, that the cargo was on fire, and what was worse, that there was no possibility of getting at the seat of the combustion. What could we do ? Why ; we took the only precaution that was practicable under the ci...

About the Author

Jules Verne (1828-1905) used a combination of scientific facts and his imagination to take readers on extraordinary imaginative journeys to fantastic places. In such books as " Around the World in Eighty Days, From the Earth to the Moon, " and " Journey to the Center of the Earth, " he predicted many technological advances of the twentieth century, including the invention of the automobile, telephone, and nuclear submarines, as well as atomic power and travel to the moon by rocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shipwreck Suspense!, July 23, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
the most surprising page-turner you'll ever read!

From an unassuming ship on an seemingly mundane voyage comes more drama, suspense, and excitement than you'd ever think to find in a 19th century book.

Although known for only a few of his works, Jules Verne has authored quite a few novels. This one should be in his top 10.

Written in journal style first person as one of the ship's passengers, this story begins in an every-day fashion but don't be fooled! As in real life, circumstances paint a very different picture than expectations. Before you know it, you're up to your knees in suspense!

What does it take to make normal people become mad? What are real hunger and real thirst? How far will a person go to ensure his own survival - or that of another? These are only a few of the questions answered so vividly that it is little less than cinematic. No one who gets through the first couple of chapters will be bored with this one!

Be warned! This book is not for the squeamish or timid. But if you are a real shipwreck-survivor story fanatic, this one is for you!
