Several weeks ago, a friend and I were reminiscing about what it had been like trying to “make it” in the entertainment industry. We were trading “war stories”, commiserating and laughing, when he handed me a book entitled, A Survivor’s Guide to Hollywood -(How to Play the Game without losing your Soul) by Robin Riker.
I took the book home and a few days later I started reading it. I had actually met Ms Riker and her husband, Evan, at a small house party a few years ago. We spent the evening chatting over wine and tidbits. I remember that she was charming, hysterically funny and it was one of the most enjoyable evenings I have ever spent.
When I started reading her book it was as if I was transported back to that evening sitting, talking, laughing and totally captivated by this warm, funny woman.
You will thoroughly enjoy this book and if you are an aspiring actor, it will be a fantastic guide for you to follow. She gives you great advise and universal axioms that can and will help you to weather the too often nerve wracking and emotional “ride’ that is the pursuit of an acting or music career. She lays out the basics and they are true for anyone determined to conquer Hollywood.
You will refer to it again and again. Follow her guide and you will better navigate the paths

You can just feel the positive energy of Robin Riker rejuvenating your soul as you read this book. For anyone trying to "make it" out there in this crazy town, this book is a must read. Robin tells some amazing stories and relives all of the highs and lows of her career. It's a hard life being an actor in Hollywood and who better to give you pointers and advice on how to keep your sanity than somebody who has been there and done that. The tips and tricks Robin gives are priceless and I was really able to relate to many of her experiences. I can't stress enough how helpful this book is, especially if you're feeling down on yourself and don't think your acting career is going the way it should be. I already recommended the book to a couple of fellow actors that have hit career slumps and feel live throwing in the towel. Don't give up, people! Read A Survivor's Guide to Hollywood and you will find that there is still hope.

One of the best books I've ever experienced. I was actually regretful when I read the last page and closed it. Without being a performer and without plans to venture to Hollywood, I was interested as I was always a fan of Riker (and Chris Elliott, of course) in "Get a Life." She lists so many simple truths in this book - they apply to everyone. Without spoiling the entire thing for those who have yet to read it, I'll cite the passage in which Robin conveys that when you have 20 bucks to your name and the rent is due, guess what: 20 bucks isn't going to pay your rent, so get yourself ... oh, you just have to read it to find out! Robin is right about this and so many other things. You'll want to keep this one accessible so you can go back to it every now and then and refresh yourself with some great viewpoints and sound advice. I hope she writes another one.

I was so pleasantly surprised by A Survivor's Guide to Hollywood because frankly, I thought it would just be a collection of fun little anecdotes about Hollywood, which would have been fine, but it is so much more than that! Robin Riker uses anecdotes from her vast experience in Hollywood to give very valuable and useful advice that is applicable for survival in all professions. It is also useful in negotiating through all aspects of our lives. There is a wisdom and a universality to what Riker suggests, which stayed with me long after I finished reading and I found myself applying the advice to experiences in my own life. Without a doubt I would highly recommend this book to young actors starting out in the entertainment business, but I also recommend it to anyone who would like a good fun read along with some very sound advice.

After moving to LA from Indiana, I was thrown into the Hollywood world and started working as an assistant to a major film and television composer. Life was completely different in LA and I was finding it a challenge to navigate this new, fast-paced world. A friend gave me this book to read and it was EXACTLY what I needed to hear at the time. Robin's book is filled with so many wonderful bits of advice to survive not only living in Hollywood, but in any line of work. Her positive attitude towards life is infectious and her comedic and colloquial writing style jumps off the page - it was hard to put it down! Most importantly, this book helped me to realize what I was meant to do in life and I am now pursuing those dreams!

I am not an actor, but I am new to living in Los Angeles.....so when I saw Robin Riker's book, A Survivor's Guide To Hollywood, I thought it might give me insight into my new hometown. Well, I got more than insight into LA. I got insight into life! Robin writes with warmth and humor and a celebration of people and I learned some things about remaining grounded in everyday living. She offers good old common sense....and a plethora of great advice. She reminded me to stay thoughtful, mindful, and grateful all while making me laugh and allowing me to live vicariously through a working actors life.
I am a voracious reader and loved this book. If you are new to LA, new to acting, or just want a good read, this book is for you.
