Book Description

February 1999
In 1997, more than 3.2 million abused children were reported to protective service agencies in the United States. In these pages are the intimate voices of survivors of the anguish of domestic violence and sexual abuse in the home the place that should be a haven of safety. There are also the voices that cry out from the pages of the Bible, giving witness to violence through the ages. Finally, there is the story of the authors own torment and horror-filled years and her healing road from victim to survivor through her faith in God and the will to live again.

From the introduction:

The people you meet in these pages will challenge your awareness and disturb your complacency. They will inspire your spirit and break your heart. Their voices will plead with you for compassion. . . . These voices will speak their deepest pain, and will dare us to hear with ears of compassion and then act with hands of determination. These voices will call Gods church, with confident voice, to the ministry of healing, for the wounds these survivors carry are the wounds that only Gods grace can heal.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"Kathy Manis Findley has given us a much needed book that not only explores the issues of abuse in an hones and readable manner, but leaves the reader with a sense of hope and meaning for the future. This book is a must read for those people who are surviving domestic abuse." -Nancy Lasiter, M.S., LAC, Domestic Violence Specialist, Family Service Agency

"The Rev. Findley listens to the biblical tales of terrible violence with new ears, and connects the stories of victims/survivors many ages past with those crying tears of agony, rage, and grief today. Spellbinding, her prose grips the reader by giving voice to the stories of those whose bodies, psyches, and spirits suffer eternally for the sins of those who were charged to live and nurture them but who instead used and abused them. She calls upon the church to reclaim the mission of Jesus Christ, exorcist f demons and healer of the brokenhearted, to end its legacy of denial and become the true instrument of the grace of Christ. [This book is] a passionate and prophetic call to the church to listen to the victims/survivors in its midst and respond to them with compassionate understanding and care."- Rev. Dr. Jennifer L. Rike, University of Detroit Mercy, Detroit, Michigan

5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing Lives Change, March 23, 2000

This review is from: The Survivor's Voice: Healing the Invisible Wounds of Violence and Abuse (Paperback)
As one who works daily with survivors of sexual violence, I know that the wounds they hold inside are deep and grievious. The trauma they have experienced is often too horror-filled to reveal. Speaking of it out loud seems impossible. I have seen the reading of this book empower them to open their souls to healing and hope. Our Sexual Assault Center recommends this book to those who come to us for help. In the pages of "The Survivor's Voice" they have found the strength to move on with life, because they read about the lives of real people who have experienced the kind of pain they have experienced. If your life has been devastated by sexual violence, please read this wonderful book. It is the best of its kind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Findley's "The Survivor's Voice" Speaks for Silenced Victims, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Survivor's Voice: Healing the Invisible Wounds of Violence and Abuse (Paperback)
Of all books I've ever read, "The Survivor's Voice"is perhaps the most insightful. In her book, Findley shares thestories of innocent victims throughout the ages. From the age old tales of the Bible, to stories related to her by victims, to her own experiences, the author brings to life the silent fears and secrets of the Survivors. All men and women who have sustained these terrors and lived to never forget are given a Voice in Findley's book. I praise God for "The Survivor's Voice" and for the support and courage it can give us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars For victims of domestic violence, this book is HOPE., August 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Survivor's Voice: Healing the Invisible Wounds of Violence and Abuse (Paperback)
If you do not read another book this year, read this one. The read will break your heart and disturb your complacency, because it will reveal a well-kept secret: that a very high percentage of the people you know have been victims of sexual, physical, and/or emotional violence in their own homes. I work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, and I know first-hand the depth of their struggle to survive and to heal. "The Survivor's Voice" is an incredible testament of a child's strength to survive abuse and an adult's courage to heal. Findley portrays the silence of her suffering, the long and arduous process of healing, and the HOPE that kept her going. As she tells her own story, she also tells the stories of several other persons who have experienced the terrors of violence and abuse. If you or anyone you know is suffering the indignity of violence in their own home, read this book. It is HOPE!
