This review is from: Sushi American Style (Hardcover)
Despite any preset ideas you may have about Sushi, the author soundly thrashes them by bringing sushi into the 21st century in a most convincing and capable way. Easy to read with outstandingly artisitc photos to show the flexibility and application of what sushi can be. This is not your father's sushi. If you've ever heard the word "Sushi" and thought "ewww, raw fish", get this book and you'll know the truth about sushi. It's so well written you'll be making these rolls for your next dinner or dinner party. Definite Homerun..

Whether you like traditional sushi or not, you'll love Sushi American Style! The book is as beautiful as its recepies are delicious. I've tried most of them, and loved them all, especially the "Sushi Mosaic Salad" and the "Cordon Bleu Roll." It was easy to learn--my girlfriend, who can't even cook instant oatmeal, made a "Cowyboy Roll" that roped me in.
Arigato, Tracy-san!

If, like me, you prefer your sushi a little, well, odd, you will like this book. I am not a fan of traditional sushi from Japanese restaurants, but instead delight in sushi bars that are willing to say "What if we added mayo and fried minced garlic to that?"
I received this book for Christmas in 2004 and I am delighted. The rolls are creative and use a variety of ingredients. I do not roll anything with fresh fish due to my location, and this book offered me plenty of options. A personal favorite is the Cowboy Roll - steak, blue cheese, onions and wasabi mayo. Yum! My boyfriend is a fan of the Elvis Roll - peanut butter, banana and bacon, batter-dipped and deep-fried. This cookbook also had some rolls that are, or could easily become, vegan. The Sesame Spinach Roll is vegan, and the Green Goddess Roll could become vegan if you used a substitute for the dressing. I already knew how to roll sushi when I received this book, so I cannot comment on the rolling instructions. Overall, this is the sushi book I reach for most frequently. If you're looking for unusual combinations of ingredients, this is the book for you!

This is the BEST sushi book I have ever read. This is about think-out-of-the-bento-box sushi: sushi made with American flair and five star style. It makes you want to get in the kitchen and play with your food!!

It's well written and has all the basic info and techniques to make maki for the unimaginative with nontraditional ingredients. I do a lot of working with what I have on hand so I thought this might be a good source of Ideas for greater variations. Unfotunatly the recipes/ingredients are mediocre and uninspiring and in most cases the flavors are muddled, but I can be a harsh critic compared to most. That being said, this could easily be a book on wraps. More over it is a collage of different types of cuisine in the form of maki rolls. The Dixie Roll, fried chicken onions and coleslaw, really? It doesn't even sound all that appetizing on a plate. However, there are plenty of people who would find this book useful and informative but If you want a very good simple book about sushi try "Sishi: Taste and Techniques". Yes it is about raw fish. If you don't like fish, the focal point of sushi, maybe sushi isn't for you. If you don't like cow would you buy a book about hamburgers that don't use cow or would you just buy a book on sandwiches hot and cold? OK one more jab. The cover of the book says "American Flair" apparently that means to take something good and clean and simple like sushi and bastardize the entire concept in the hopes of broader appeal to those that are ignorant to the virtues of sushi(what chu talkin about Willis!) or whatever it is that the "American Flair" has been applied to. If you didn't find this review helpful, this book is perfect for you.

I love this book. It has great ideas for sushi, using American products. It also teachers the basics of how to roll sushi and make the rice. The book also has great images and delicious ideas for parties. It came with way more ideas than I expected, like dipping sauces and dessert sushi. Overall, a great buy!
