3.0 out of 5 stars At least it was low cost.
The box this kit arrives in is beautiful. The only problem was I had to pry the drawers open with a screw driver as they were jammed shut, and this wasn't easy. The good - The sushi making book has good information. The rectangle mold for molding sushi works great. The okay - The chopsticks, holders, and dishes are all usable. I bought this kit because my wife and I are addicted to Sushi, but the cost was killing us. To aleaviate the financial strain we decided to learn to make Sushi ourselves. This kit has it all; An easy to read how to booklet, bamboo rolling mat, dipping dishes, rice molds for sashimi and four sets of reusable chop sticks. All of this together in a very nice storage box package. As for solving our sushi desire it has. Although making sushi is a time consuming ordeal at first, once you get the hang of it you will want to throw sushi parties for all your friends. The hardest part of making sushi would be perfecting the sticky rice and locating all the ingredients at your local supermarket, but as far as cost goes you will spend a fraction of what it costs to purchase ready made sushi in a resteraunt or market.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Value, February 14, 2007
This review is from: Sushi Deluxe Book & Kit (Hardcover)
I purchased the Sushi Deluxe Book & Kit as a gift and ended up keeping it for myself. The book is small but informative which is why I rated it a 4 instead of 5. The really amazing value is the kit. The chopsticks and accompanying dishes are very good quality. It also comes with a bamboo mat for making sushi rolls. Based upon quality and price I would recommend this item to anyone who is a novice at sushi making.

The good - The sushi making book has good information. The rectangle mold for molding sushi works great. The okay - The chopsticks, holders, and dishes are all usable. The bad - The bamboo roller was totally covered in mold and had to be thrown out. I purchased a silicone sushi roller at our local kitchen store which is fantastic! It works much better than bamboo, and washes and dries beautifully. Overall, this kit was low cost, so I didn't ask for my money back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sushi Deluxe Book and Kit, September 22, 2008

This kit comes with the 80-page book Sushi Made Easy by Kumfoo Wong, a 9" x 10" bamboo rolling mat, four sets of black and gold plastic chopsticks, four painted ceramic chopstick rests, a plastic 5-piece rice mold, and two decorated ceramic dishes for dipping sauces.

The box in which all this comes is sturdy and decorative, and is designed to store everything. The top of the box lifts off, and a hinged door on the side of the box opens, revealing several drawers, which hold everything.

The book that comes with this kit, Sushi Made Easy, by Kumfoo Wong, is an introductory guide to preparing and presenting sushi. The book is targeted to beginners, and at only 80 pages, is completely manageable. Sushi Made Easy provides an introduction to the more prominent sushi ingredients and kitchen utensils and equipment needed, as well as advice on selecting suitable fish to be used raw. There is a great deal of emphasis here on appearance and presentation. Sushi Made Easy covers nigiri-sushi, sushi rolls, hand rolls, rolled sweet omelet, and soups. The book is fully-illustrated, and features step-by-step instructions for making each recipe.

Making sushi with this set was a fairly simple, intuitive process. The bamboo rolling mat, which is the primary reason we bought the kit, is big enough, and it gets the job done. Everything included appears to be of good quality.

The Sushi Deluxe Book and Kit are an excellent, inexpensive introduction for anyone who wants to make sushi at home. This set also makes an excellent gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to get started, January 9, 2007

This kit includes the bamboo rolling mat, chopsticks (and chopstick rests), bowls for dipping and a rice mold in addition to the book. It comes in a deluxe box with drawers to store your tools. The book fairly clear, although I had trouble figuring out how to roll with the mat.

I was very happy with this kit, especially the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Sushi Deluxe Book & Kit (Hardcover)
I was a little bit worried about the book, but it is easy to follow and gives instructions and recipes that the novice sushi chef understands. The additional accessories are handsome and durable. I had a great time making sushi with this kit and I would recommend it as a gift for anyone who enjoys sushi but doesn't want to pay what the restaurants charge.

This is a cute little kit. It comes as a pressboard cabinet with drawers containing the chopsticks, rice press and book. It has everything you need to get started trying your hand at sushi preparation. I recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars good for beginners, December 29, 2010

this little kit came with all the stuff a beginner needs. It comes with a little book that has SOME recipes, chopsticks, sauce dishes, but most importantly, the bamboo mat. My only complaint about this is that the book is kind of lacking in the recipe department. It pretty much gives you the background history of sushi and the types. I also wish it gave a recipe for the sauces sushi places use. Other than that, its a pretty good kit and worth getting

NOTE: a sauce that i have found that is used is:

Mayo w/ Siracha "rooster" sauce. I squeeze out mayo, then mix in a bit of siracha. I keep mixing and adding siracha until it is a light pink/orange, but thats just me, i like the extra "kick" from a sauce. It may be too hot for some.

I admit, I am also a sushi addict. And like others have said, it's not a cheap habit. I crave sushi, and get very cranky when I realize I can't afford it. So I ordered this set about 2 years ago to try and curb my expensive habit. Though I clearly am not a pro, after some practice, your sushi can come out looking pretty darn good and tasting almost as delicious as your favorite sushi spot.

We have an awesome asian grocery store within about 20 minutes of our house, which helps a lot. and I definitely could have gotten the staple tools there, but I wanted the book too, so I figured make it easy and order this kit. None the less, we do go to the market for ingredients(we try to buy the same brands that I've seen at our sushi place)and it's about a quarter of the price it is in the regular grocery store. I tend to stick to veggie sushi or shrimp/crab, because I don't want to be the one to kill my boyfriend with food poisoning by accident. But even sticking to that, this kit comes in handy. I make inside out rolls(rice on the outside, nori seaweed on the inside) by covering the bamboo mat with seran wrap. The book was great in teaching me the basic steps, and I still refer back to it.

Do yourself a favor, get a rice maker. That to me, was the most difficult aspect of making sushi and trying to do it in a pot nearly killed me. The rice maker took the guesswork and frustration out of the mix, and you can get a small one between fifteen and twenty five bucks.

Great kit, awesome gift.
