I'm all for well-executed fusion cuisine, but this sushi cookbook by Yumi Umemura features some extremely odd, unappetizing recipes. Examples include "Taco Sushi" (store-bought taco shells filled with sushi rice and ground beef seasoned with ketchup and Tabasco sauce) and "Sushi Pizza" (plain white rice, flatted into a circle and covered with tomato sauce and cheese). Beyond the uninspired recipes, however, the writing in this cookbook is repetitive, stilted, and just makes for a very awkward read. It's also riddled with typos and inaccurate information (p.162: Korean sushi rolls are called "kimbap" not "kimpa"--something any quick Google search can tell you).

Overall, not a bad book if you want to know basics, like how to prepare sushi rice or roll a standard sushi roll, but there are plenty of videos online that offer a visual explanation of those very skills. This book's one redeeming quality, however, is Noboru Murata's photography--though I wouldn't touch half the recipes in this book, every last dish is beautifully photographed.

This is a fantastically beautiful book which is loaded with information. Sushi is becoming a popular commodity and can now be easily found in even your local grocery store. But those offerings pale in comparison with the exceptionally wide varieties presented in this book, both in ingredients and visual appeal. I've purchased three copies of this book as gifts and no one has been even slightly disappointed. This volume definitely belongs on every sushi-lover's book shelf.

A fresh and hands on approach to sushi with clear instructions and some beautiful photos that get your mouth watering before you have begun to roll...
A wonderful book for beginner and someone who has dabbled a bit - as it throws in some lovely new ingredients and cutting techniques and looks

I will be honest up front and tell you that I am NOT a sushi lover. It may seem strange for me to review a cookbook on sushi, but I have a daughter that LOVES sushi! I wanted some sushi cookbooks to make a lovely birthday dinner for her next birthday. I was interested to see what I could find that she would love and the rest of us could at least eat and possibly even enjoy. This cookbook was a bit of a mixed bag. There were some interesting recipes such as Flower Rolls, Easy Smoked Salmon Sushi and more, and then there were some that, frankly, turned my stomach. As much as I don't care for sushi, if I have to eat it I at least want it to be fairly authentic. I couldn't believe that the Two-Cheese Tuna Salad Rolls are actually wrapped in American cheese!! Ew! As for Sushi Pizza, I think I'll pass.

There are some interesting recipes that I think will work fine for my daughter's birthday, but this cookbook over all did not impress me.

I received a copy of this cookbook from Tuttle Publishing for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
