Book Description

January 3, 2002
'Eating is pleasurable, eating is delicious, eating is sensual' says Susie. But for so many of us eating is associated with anguish and abstinence. From the first page this little book shows us how to think and feel differently about what we eat. So that we eat when we are hungry, eat what we want to eat to satisfy us and stop when we are full. Each page contains an easily absorbed bite-sized statement to transform eating that hurts into eating that nourishes and calms. This book isn't magic but it feels as if it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and reader-friendly book, April 4, 2010

This review is from: Susie Orbach on Eating (Paperback)
Susie Orbach is one of two pioneers (the other is Geneen Roth) who, in the 1980s produced her ground-breaking books: Fat is a Feminist Issue I & II. In this book she very clearly outlines the critical factors one needs to employ to overcome any type of overeating problem: binge-eating, or just plain overeating. I am a psychologist who has treated many individuals with various forms of binge and emotional-eating problems and I have bought and sold (at cost) over 60 of these books to my clients. Currently I am conducting an 8-week psycho-educational group for women who want to overcome emotional eating and I have asked each of them to purchase and use this book as a guide. They are all impressed by it.

I especially like that it is so accessible, even to people who aren't fond of reading. It's not necessary to read from front to back, but can be picked up, at any page, and read, with some positive and helpful suggestion for the reader. I cannot say enough how important this work is and how sad it is that so many "diets" continue to flourish when this simple treatment is the only one I have seen be truely effective with this increasingly common problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life., August 10, 2011

I lost over 125 pounds by calorie counting. This book showed me the way to maintain my weight without counting. I read it frequently and I'm always finding something new that speaks to me. If you have trouble with overeating or under-eating, this book will help you. It teaches you that your body gives you all the signals you need to maintain a healthy weight if you just listen and respond appropriately. I can't recommend this book enough. It's quick and easy to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars needs an editor, February 13, 2011

As a huge fan of Geneen Roth, I knew I'd appreciate Orbach's advice. I find this a handy and comforting volume to have on my kindle so I can turn to it any time, but the quality is poor. It is full of irritating typos. One thing I love about Roth' books is how well written they are. This doesn't come close.
