What the previous reviewer neglected to say was that all of these songs are remakes. If you want to hear the original versions, look elsewhere.

Masterpiece: Greatest Hits, March 10, 2007
This review is from: Suspicious Minds (Audio CD)
This CD is as close to perfect as one can get. It is actually a greatest hits album as it contains all of Candi's chart material that I am aware of. In addition, some of these tracks - those from the disco period - are the extended or remixed versions, like the magnificent Young Hearts Run Free, Victim and Honest I Do.
Her voice is so authentically soulful that she turns every song into an experience, including the country classic Stand By Your Man. The production is superb and the material demonstrates that Staton was a sensitive and accomplished interpreter of every musical style: disco, pop, soul, gospel and every type of R&B she covered.
Her debut hit I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart and I'm Just A Prisoner are funky 1960s soul whilst Now You Got The Upper Hand is a lilting tour de force of a ballad. The rhythmic You Got The Love is a most powerful and stirring gospel song that was also a dance hit in the UK in the early 1990s.
On such a masterpiece it is difficult to select highlights, but I have to also mention her atmospheric interpretations of In The Ghetto and Suspicious Minds, the joyful Sweet Feeling, the uptempo Run To Me, the disco masterpiece When You Wake Up Tomorrow and the heartbreaking He Called Me Baby.
Every single song is tuneful, expertly produced and sung with heart and feeling. One just wants to listen over and over again. Candi Staton may be a relatively obscure figure in the R&B universe but I would say this album is essential for all those who love soul, gospel and disco music.
