When it comes to female fronted gothic style metal, this cd has got to be one of the most haunting and intense of them all. It actually reminds me of early 1970's Black Sabbath, (the first band ever to attempt this sound successfully) if you had replaced Ozzy Osbourne with a female vocalist.
It's the one cd to play while reading your favorite Stephen King horror novel, preferably by candlelight on a dark and stormy winter's night, or better yet to play while reading the origional horror master, H.P. Lovecraft. Great contrasts between the male backing bass/baritone vocals and the female soprano's lead vocals are the key here, as well as some steady but heavy guitars. Also no male growling vocals, which is a pleasant change. A five star effort!

I have been into the European Gothic metal scene for a few years now. We don't have anything this good in the USA. Too bad. Anyways, this cd--Susperia I would put into my top five Gothic metal cd's of all time. Extremely melodic, the female vocals have that german accent edge which makes them so special. The male vocals are deep; kinda like the ones on Type O Negative, or Beseech. You can understand all the words. Good poetry throughout. If you are a little curious about european gothic metal, this is a good place to start. Highly recomended.

I love this album. For those of you who like gothic music as well as death metal this is for you. The female operatic vocals are simple yet elegant. The lack of over-production gives the music a quality that reminds me of early death metal like Hellhammer. It steers away from the more commercial metal sounding Nightwish and heads more in the direction of Tristania and Sisters of Mercy.
