I have had digestive and intestinal issue for years. Part of it I inherited from my parents and part I got from drinking a coca cola spiked with acid, thanks to the Viet Cong in Vietnam. Both have caused life-long suffering. I tried every possible diet combination and so-called digestives but still I had problems.

2.0 out of 5 stars No difference... yogurt or nothing at all
I've eaten yogurt and cottage cheese made with probiotics, so when Amazon Vine offered a sample to try -- I signed up. I was interested in seeing how the pill would work in comparison since it means no extra calories when you're not in the mood for yogurt or cottage cheese (some of the probiotic yogurt products taste terrible, but Dannon Activia vanilla is tasty)...

I've been taking Sustenex daily for about three weeks now and I've noticed a remarkable reduction of bloating, pain, and unpleasant mornings in the bathroom. Right now I could almost star in a TV commercial: a big smiling face, two thumbs up in the air and a click of my heels. I'm not 100 percent, but maybe 90.

I just signed up with Amazon to get it sent to me automatically every month.

Try it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Alternative To Yogurt, January 9, 2008
This review is from: Sustenex with Ganeden-BC30, Probiotic, 30 Capsules (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Let me preface this by saying that I am a firm believer in probiotics and regularly take kefir and enhanced yogurt as a part of my daily diet. So when I got my 30 day supply, I really didn't notice a difference. All I can say is that I feel good, have not been sick (everyone in my office has had colds) and everything seems to be working fine down there. I will say that I've been slightly more gassy after starting with the Sustenex supplements, but I can't say for sure they are the cause -- though I suspect they may be.

So let me just focus on the pro's here:

1. Convenience - it is easier to take a capsule than eat a container of yogurt. No refrigeration needed.
2. Calories - 0 vs. the 150 calories in 8oz of plain yogurt.
3. Sugar Free - Even plain yogurt has sugar, this doesn't.
4. Right kind of bacteria -- many yogurts don't have the proper mix of bacteria to promote intestinal health.
5. Targeted - the probiotics make it to the small intestine while those in food may be destroyed in the stomach.
6. Price - at about 50¢ a serving, this is a good deal.

Now you won't get the other dietary benefits that you get with a good dairy product, but then again that is not why you are getting this, right? If you don't mind investing a little time, this home Kefir making kit is another good way to go. Kefir Starter Kit by Body Ecology Diet - Makes up to 42 Gallons of High Grade Kefir!

To summarize, I've been happy with the results. But the only way to know for sure it to try it yourself.

UPDATE: I just finished my 30 day supply and I have to say that right after writing this review, the gassy aspect passed. Perhaps because I started taking it with a fiber supplement, who knows. I do know this though. Almost everyone at my office and all of my family had colds this past month. I did not. Did the Sustenex boost my immunse system and help me ward off illness. Perhaps.

Sadly, I didn't experience anything different. Based on research, it sounds like probiotics are hit or miss. They work great for some and don't for others.

For those who do benefit from probiotics -- the pill form has an advantage over yogurt in that it has more probiotics (how much should we even have?), does not require refrigeration, 0 calories, and cheaper. Amazon sells a 30 day supply for $14.99. Comparable pricing for yogurt depends on your geographical location and store. It's about $3.85 for four days' worth of yogurt. The pills are easily cheaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Probiotic!, January 4, 2008

*****
I was pleasantly surprised that this product would be so helpful for me with regards to my digestive problems, which cleared up when I took Sustenex. I take probiotics for general health, and honestly didn't expect to see any kind of dramatic results. There are so many positive things about Sustenex that I hardly know where to start.

Unlike some other probiotics, it doesn't need to be refrigerated. Big plus.

The Ganeden-BC30 (the mix/strain of probiotic bacteria used in Sustenex) is highly regarded and is recommended by Dr. Andrew Weil (although he has his own brand of probiotics); it is coated so that it survives stomach acid and bile and makes it to the small intestine. Thus, you are not throwing your money away, but spending it effectively on probiotics that will be useful. Another huge plus.

Sustenex delivers more than ten times the live cells of probiotic bacteria than yogurt! It boosts your immune system and strengthens your digestive system. Sustenex "assists the digestive process in the final absorption of vitamins, minerals, and water." As we age, we need probiotics even and Sustenex is one effective way to get them. It has been tested a lot, and seems to be more standardized, probably because of the Ganeden-BC30, and I find this a big plus too.

You only need to take ONE pill each day, because Sustenex is so effective.

I'm a very satisfied customer and will continue to take Sustenex. I was sent a complimentary box as part of the Amazon Vine program, but will gladly pay for it next month...and the next...and the next!

Highly recommended.

One thing I really like about this product is the effort they've made to help the beneficial bacteria survive your stomach acids to help deliver it live to your intestines where it can do some good. The bacteria are protected by multiple layers of natural organic material that protects the bacteria as they travel through the stomach.

Having enough beneficial bacteria in your colon is very good for your health and strengthens the ability of your immune system to fight off infections. Especially if you've recently had to take antibiotics, this is a fast way to recover the colonic flora you need for good health.

Sustenex delivers 2 billion bacteria to your colon per capsule!

It will help, of course, if you also eat enough fiber, because that's what these bacteria feed on. If you get the bacteria to your intestine and don't give them what they need to survive, it won't do you much good. But combined with fiber, this is a powerful but simple way to boost your health.

I switched to this product since it was 1/2 the price of Align. Big mistake! Didn't work and made problems worse. I'm back on Align and bloating is gone again. Align is the only pro-biotic that has worked for me and I have tried 10+ brands over 10 years.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seems to work, August 27, 2009
This review is from: Sustenex with Ganeden-BC30, Probiotic, 30 Capsules (Health and Beauty)
I've had horrible ibs for years. To the point where I'm reluctant to leave the house because I get sudden urges and have to go NOW! I'm usually in the bathroom anywhere from 8-10 times a day. It's been awful.

I turned to probiotics about 3 months ago because I couldn't stand living that way anymore. I started off using the Phillips colon health. I didn't see an immediate response, but I kept taking it anyway. Once that was gone, I bought a box of sustenex. I've recently been having actual formed stools and going maybe 3-4 times a day instead, which for me is HUGE. I've gained more confidence to go out and enjoy life as I'm not always running to the bathroom and even when I do have to go, it's not usually as immediate a need.

The only real complain I have with this product is that it tastes AWFUL. And I'm not exaggerating either. It's NASTY. As soon as it hits my mouth and the flavor gets in my mouth it makes me gag. I think once I'm done with this box, I'm going to look for a similar product made by someone else.

If you can stand the taste, it seems to work. So give it a try. What have you got to lose?

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I take medication that wreaks havoc with my digestive system. In the past, my daily diet has consisted of yogurt, prunes, and raw fruit and veggies. I noticed a difference within the first few days of taking Sustenex. And it's so easy - one pill daily with water. None of that awful-tasing powder to mix or liquids to be applied to your drink that you can't taste but make your drink gooey. I would definitely recommend this product and intend to continue to take it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sustenex Probiotics, March 13, 2008

Elliot Knapp (Seattle, Washington United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sustenex with Ganeden-BC30, Probiotic, 30 Capsules (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
To preface this review, I'd like to note that I'm not a sufferer of any digestive disorder or related illness, so my use of Sustenex's probiotic capsules was not intended to treat or improve a specific condition. In light of this, I'm dealing with Sustenex's claims that the product may improve the digestive and immune health of anyone who takes it.

This package contains 30 capsules, enough for one month of recommended once-a-day use. As the product's brochure (and the Amazon product page) touts, one capsule of Sustenex contains more active cultures than yogurt, which is good news. There are lots of health sources that point to the health and immune system benefits of active cultures that live in yogurt (the SuperFoods Rx book is one of them). When your body and digestive tract react to and deal with the bacteria in yogurt, it's kind of like a "workout" to keep your immune system sharp, so when a really nasty bug comes your way, your immune system can either defeat it outright, or deal with the infection more quickly and at less of a cost to your health. So, Sustenex's "Ganaden-BC30" active cultures should be very good for the user's digestive health and immune system.

Why only 3 stars? After taking this supplement for a month, I really didn't notice any difference (good or bad) in my digestive health or generally in my immune system. It's not that I think the product didn't work--I'm a firm believer that long-term health and immune system function are based on choices that you make on a day-to-day basis, the effects of which are cumulative, not based on a wonder pill that changes your body instantly. For all I know, Sustenex contributed greatly to my health, there's just not really a way for me to tell, which definitely affects what I write to you, the review reader. If you want a product that will magically prevent you from ever getting sick and prevent you from ever having an upset stomach or gas, Sustenex will disappoint you greatly (and I don't know what supplement will actually meet your expectations!). If you believe probiotics can benefit your life in a slightly less quantifiable way and are interested in taking a capsule, Sustenex seems like a good choice to me. I really can't bring myself to rate the product 5 stars, though, because I didn't see any direct, causal relationship between the state of my health and taking the capsules. If you do buy Sustenex, I recommend taking lots of water with each capsule--a couple times I had pretty foul burps about an hour after taking the capsule, perhaps because I didn't send it through my digestive system with enough water and speed!
