Product: ambit 3 sport sapphire

When I first heard about the fitbit surge and iphone watch being released in 2015 I was set on getting a fitness band/watch. I watched numerous reviews on the Fitbit surge and came to the conclusion that the heart rate monitor was not going to give me the accuracy I wanted. The Apple "sport" watch doesn't have an onboard GPS which immediately ruled it out because who wants to run with their iPhone 6 plus! Over the past few months I have read a ton of reviews on watches from garmin, polar, and timex. Each company offers a watch that is similar to the suunto ambit 3 sport but what I love about the ambit 3 sport is that it looks good while working out yet classy enough to wear anywhere! I am a female and all of the other watches seemed pretty manly so this was a huge plus.

My first thought about the watch was this is huge (my wrist size is a little over 6 inches). I decided to try it for a week and after a few days I got used to the size and weight. Currently I am using the watch for indoor cycling, treadmill running, weightlifting, and hiking.

Pros:
The GPS has worked great (finds signal in less than 30 seconds) and has even found a signal indoors.

Heart rate mintor is small and comfortable.

The suunto app takes a little time to figure out and so does operating the watch itself but if you put in some time with it and read the manual you will figure it out.

You are able to customize each sport mode with the data that you want to see on the watch during that activity (ex. Running, biking, walking)

You can turn off gps for indoor activities.

Battery life has been good thus far. Since I don't wear the watch at night I usually just go ahead and charge it.

To be honest, the watch is great. Really solid GPS; lacks a usable stopwatch for workouts, but otherwise good.

But it has an achilles heel: You can't use it without Suunto's MoveCount mess. MovesCount is a web service that is constantly down (for a week or more at a time); experiencing technical difficulties; failing to connect to my watch; driving itself through infinite loops of dialog boxes; and it can't even get elevations, distances, and mile splits right. Also, you don't have a choice of whether or not to use their software - it's strictly forced onto you.

If it weren't for MovesCount, I'd give it 5 stars; but they really need to get it together.

Great watch! It does everything and triathlete needs (and some more). It's bigger than the 920xt, it doesn't have running dynamics and daily step counter, but it looks way cooler and the fact that it has a water HR monitor its a big plus. I personally would be happy with the Ambit3 as with the 920xt. One does a little more things and the other looks better.

Let's talk about the unit itself first, then customer support.

The unit is solid, well built, excellent batter life, includes a chest strap heart rate sensor, easy to pair with sensor, locks onto GPS fast, invertable back ground and lock on back light, lockable buttons so you don't accidentally stop recording........all this is to be expected for a $200-400 price tag.

Some cons, for my use.......heart rate alarms only alarm when you exceed set thresholds but will not alarm again after you enter and exit presets again, BPM can't be set to full screen, you had better know how to use a computer for the software that this thing downloads to, a LOT more detail and settings than needed for the average user.

Customer service........

Horrible, unknowledgable, pre-canned cookie cutter responses to emails, supposedly a 72hr turnaround for most questions........try weeks at a shot instead, I asked a simple question about future updates and went through 6 emails before someone with an IQ above 7 responded.

Basically.......BUYER BEWARE

The unit is solid, customer service is a joke........if this is your first device of this type I recommend other manufacturers of similar devices.

For the price, I've been able to buy 2 competitors devices and been more satisfied

I have had the watch for a couple of weeks now, and am really enjoying it. The GPS is found quite quickly and tracks very accurately. It is super comfortable and I like the look of it, and although I have a small wrist its size isn't over-powering... just looks like a big modern watch. I am not seeing any issue with staining of the white band - it cleans up easily if it gets dirty. Movescount is a good interface, I just wish Suunto did a better job showing you how to adjust things on your watch, like what information is on the activity screens or adding other sports like skiing (easily done through movescount). But it is neat to track your activity through the app and my bike group thought the movie I made on a day trip on a mountain in Romania, showing our route interspersed with photos/video clips of wild horses, sheep, beautiful views and peasants was a fun gimmick. Movesount has an app for android phones now, but I haven't figured out why my Sony Xperia Z3 can't be seen, so for now I have to upload my activity by patching to my computer (and then the activity is synched with the phone's app). I didn't buy the model with the heart rate monitor bundled in, but now it is on my wish list.
