When I first heard about the fitbit surge and iphone watch being released in 2015 I was set on getting a fitness band/watch. I watched numerous reviews on the Fitbit surge and came to the conclusion that the heart rate monitor was not going to give me the accuracy I wanted. The Apple "sport" watch doesn't have an onboard GPS which immediately ruled it out because who wants to run with their iPhone 6 plus! Over the past few months I have read a ton of reviews on watches from garmin, polar, and timex. Each company offers a watch that is similar to the suunto ambit 3 sport but what I love about the ambit 3 sport is that it looks good while working out yet classy enough to wear anywhere! I am a female and all of the other watches seemed pretty manly so this was a huge plus.
My first thought about the watch was this is huge (my wrist size is a little over 6 inches). I decided to try it for a week and after a few days I got used to the size and weight. Currently I am using the watch for indoor cycling, treadmill running, weightlifting, and hiking.
The GPS has worked great (finds signal in less than 30 seconds) and has even found a signal indoors.
Heart rate mintor is small and comfortable.
The suunto app takes a little time to figure out and so does operating the watch itself but if you put in some time with it and read the manual you will figure it out.
You are able to customize each sport mode with the data that you want to see on the watch during that activity (ex. Running, biking, walking)
You can turn off gps for indoor activities.
Battery life has been good thus far. Since I don't wear the watch at night I usually just go ahead and charge it.Read more ›
But it has an achilles heel: You can't use it without Suunto's MoveCount mess. MovesCount is a web service that is constantly down (for a week or more at a time); experiencing technical difficulties; failing to connect to my watch; driving itself through infinite loops of dialog boxes; and it can't even get elevations, distances, and mile splits right. Also, you don't have a choice of whether or not to use their software - it's strictly forced onto you.
If it weren't for MovesCount, I'd give it 5 stars; but they really need to get it together.
The unit is solid, well built, excellent batter life, includes a chest strap heart rate sensor, easy to pair with sensor, locks onto GPS fast, invertable back ground and lock on back light, lockable buttons so you don't accidentally stop recording........all this is to be expected for a $200-400 price tag.
Some cons, for my use.......heart rate alarms only alarm when you exceed set thresholds but will not alarm again after you enter and exit presets again, BPM can't be set to full screen, you had better know how to use a computer for the software that this thing downloads to, a LOT more detail and settings than needed for the average user.
Horrible, unknowledgable, pre-canned cookie cutter responses to emails, supposedly a 72hr turnaround for most questions........try weeks at a shot instead, I asked a simple question about future updates and went through 6 emails before someone with an IQ above 7 responded.
The unit is solid, customer service is a joke........if this is your first device of this type I recommend other manufacturers of similar devices.
For the price, I've been able to buy 2 competitors devices and been more satisfied
