A very accurate compass.

Lining up the hairline with the target takes some getting used to, especially for compass bearings where the target is well above or below eye level.

I need a quick azimuth and elevation check for an instrument at work and this little device was the perfect answer. No batteries, no set-up, just look through the viewfinder and read off the compass heading or elevation angle.

Whenever we set up a satellite dish, this is the tool we reach for.

The only problem is the numbers can sometimes be difficult to read.

I was willing to step up to this price range to get something I could use for amateur surveying/mapping. Both the compass and the clinometer in the Tandem are as accurate and as easy to use as I could have wanted. It's great to be able to switch quickly between the compass and clinometer functions. There's no need to adjust a dial for either kind of reading -- you just hold the device in the appropriate position, look into the appropriate eyepiece, line up the hairline with your target, and jot down the reading you see. Inclination readings are in degrees and percent, side by side. For my purposes, I find percents much more convenient.

Lining up the hairline with the target takes some getting used to, especially for compass bearings where the target is well above or below eye level. When I expect to need accurate uphill or downhill bearings I carry a makeshift plumb line (a small weight on a string) to bring the target up or down to eye level. I've only needed the plumb line a handful of times. The compass doesn't have a declination adjustment but that's rarely a problem for me since I run most of my data through the computer anyway.

This kind of compass isn't as convenient as others for map-and-compass navigation. I figure I could make it work for that if I ever had to, but that wasn't what I got it for.

The solid aluminum case feels reassuringly sturdy. The device comes with a length of string intended for a lanyard but I soon replaced it with a real lanyard.

I like it but there are many brands now which are selling for a lower price. Although i have not test the other brands, others reviews suggest they are comparable to suunto but at half its price.
