5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to live with and it works!
I bought the book 11/98 for my 39th birthday. I decided to set a goal of losing weight by my next birthday and after following her plan I know I will reach my goal. Since November '98, I have lost 62 pounds and have so much energy! I follow level one and occasionally go to level two. The holidays were super easy. I am a busy career woman and I have no trouble...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 2nd and 3rd books
This is the first of the three "Somersize" books. It explains the program in the most detail, but honestly its a very boring read and the recipes are not practicle. I found the second book "Get Skinny on Fabulous Food" to be much more interesting and the recipes are things that I actual make (the Chinese Chicken Salad is excellent). The second book...

I am a busy career woman and I have no trouble cooking her recipes. Before Somersizing I was buying "convenience" foods loaded with hidden sugars and white flour. Thanks to Somersizing, I know what to look for on the food labels and as a result I am no longer addicted to sugar and caffeine and am eating whole, nutritious foods. I don't have "gastric distress" and no bloating after eating. The inches are melting away and I have lost four clothing sizes in almost 5 months. I have tried other diets like Fit for Life and Protein Power and they made me lethargic and uncomfortable. This is the easiest way of eating that I have ever found to lose weight and I know I can follow it the rest of my life and never feel hungry or deprived!

The second book also explains the basics of the plan, but in a more condensed form so you don't have to read a bunch of in depth explanation like you do in "Eat Great, Lose Weight". If you haven't read any of the books and are looking for the *best* of the three then I wouldn't recommend this one. Go with "Get Skinny" or the newer "Eat, Cheat and Melt the fat away".

5.0 out of 5 stars This book has changed my life!, November 6, 2000

I've been fighting a losing battle with my weight my entire life. But I've been on this program for about 8 days, and already I feel like a different person! I'm doing Weight Watchers (counting points) as well as Somersizing, and when I weighed in I had lost 7.6 lbs. And the food is wonderful and good for you! Unbelievable! I wish I could tell everyone about this way of eating. I want to go up to people in the grocery store and say "Don't buy that fat-free junk, there's a better way!" The public has been sold a load of BS by the diet industry. I don't know where the idea came from that fat is bad for you and fat-free processed junk food is good for you, but this book will change your way of thinking!

I think what worked for me is that I cut everything out at once... caffeine, sugar, white flour, and basically anything refined or processed. I'm not really sure whether my success is due to Suzanne's food combining theory, or that I just cut out carbs and sugar and started eating more veggies and lean meats. But I'm not going to mess with what seems to be working. The first few days I had a pretty bad headache, but now I feel great. I eat till I'm full and I have no sugar or carb cravings. I made it through Halloween and didn't eat a single piece of candy, which I couldn't believe, but I just didn't want it after reading about what sugar does to you! Now I have more energy than I've had in years, I sleep better at night, it's not as hard to get up in the morning, AND... here's the best part, I don't have the terrible stomach problems I used to have.

Please buy this book and follow this program if you're tired of being fat and eating diet food!

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!, January 14, 2000
I've been "Somersizing" for six weeks and have lost 23 pounds! The recipes are great, and I don't miss starches and sugar at all! I've seen several people inquire about a message board; iVillage.com has a message board devoted to Somersizing, as well as boards for the Atkins diet and several other plans. The women there are so supportive of each other. I hope to see you there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a diet, a lifestyle, September 4, 2000
By
Darlene Bocek (Escondido, California) - See all my reviews
The concept of food combining has helped me get back to a healthy weight. I started at the beginning of July. It's been eight weeks and I have lost 23 pounds. It's still falling off. The principle is this: starch, sugar & caffeine give you false energy. If you eliminate them, your body finds alternate sources of energy: your fat!

The energy source, being consistent (at least in my body) provides continual power to your body, so you don't EVER feel tired. In fact, I'm never "wiped-out" anymore, and I'm rarely tired enough to sleep. And I rarely exercise, though I stand and walk all day in my teaching job.

The second principle has to do with food-combining. No proteins with carbohydrates. See the book for details, but I'll just say this. I feel like this diet is a "healthy" diet. My sister in law was on the Atkins diet, lost so much weight. But I never wanted to go on that diet, since it seemed *WRONG* to not have grains in your diet and to pork-out on meat.

Suzanne's diet also allows fruit, where the others say you cannot have fruit. The book is written so personally that when you've finished reading it, you feel like you KNOW Suzanne personally. At least I do. It's chock-full of photographs of her family, her grandbaby, her daughter, etc.

Someone reviewing her other book (same somercising idea) said it's good for the short-term. I disagree. When you reach a plateau, trick your body by eating just fruits and veggies for a week. You'll begin to lose weight again, then go back to somercising.

You'll enjoy reading the book. And I'm sure you'll lose weight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Changes your way of thinking of food, January 12, 2000
By A Customer
I really recommend this book, easy to understand, easy to follow and great recipes. I would have liked Suzanne Somers to focus more on the healthy fats and not so much eggs and meat, thats why I am only giving 4 stars. I started the programm 2 weeks ago and have really lost weight without starving myself. I cannot tell you how much, because I dont own a scale, but from how my clothes fit, I would assume somewhere around 2-4 pounds. I never in my life had problems with weight and I didn't really know what it feels like to be on diet, but during my pregnancy I gained 40 pounds and couldn't loose it all after my baby was born. Than we moved from Europe to the US and I thought: This is my chance, with all those fat free foods in the US. I'll Loose those 10 pounds excess weight in no time." But I not only did NOT LOOSE the weight, I gained 10 pounds more, was hungry all the time and had incredible sugar ups and downs. Now after two weeks the craving for sugar is gone, although I must admit it took one incredible long week to get over it, I don't have these energy drops in the middle of the afternoon anymore and don't feel bloated after every meal. I eat more vegetables than ever before! Over the weekend we had friends over and I started to cheat a little. So, at a mexican place I not only ate tortilla with the chicken, but I had the fried beans and the white rice, too. Boy, did I feel bad- it was not worth it. THIS IS GREAT WAY TO EAT! But I honestly think, that it works more because of the elimination of sugar and bad carbohydrates and not so much because of the food combination. For those of you, who would like to have more insight in the food digestions chemistry read "Michel Montignacs 'Eat yourself slim'" He explains it in more details than Suzanne Somers does. Good luck to all you Somersizers!

4.0 out of 5 stars don't buy this book, buy "Get Skinny on Fabulous Foods ", June 22, 2000

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought both books, but the second one (Get Skinny on Fabulous Foods) had more recipies and a recap of the "Eat Great, Lose Weight". Along with the recap was some updated information. Get Skinny has all this book has and more. Save some money. The "diet" itself, however, is great! I've only been on it for 1 week, but I feel great! Never felt better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book - Great Information!, October 31, 1999
By A Customer
As a child I ate a ton of carbs and was fat! As a teenager I elimated sugar and ate a great deal of fats and was skinny for 10 years. After some life changing events I started eating the carbs again for comfort and in 6 short years of this type of diet my weight skyrocketed to an all time high of 225 and constantly increasing. I am only 30 years old and this was not supposed to happen to me (I thought this only happened to older people). I had absolutely no energy and was extremely depressed. To make matters worse I also suffered from extremely painful irratable bowel syndrome! My physician recommended the Suzanne Somers book and mentioned that he has had several patients lose a tremendous amount of weight and have kept it off for long periods of time, in his opinion "A true measure of a good eating plan". I immediately purchased the book, read it from cover-to-cover that night and started the "diet" the next morning. I have been on the plan 4 days and have lost 6 lbs! Each day seems better and better. Susanne's book made me remember that my body just cannot tolerate the carbohydrates and caffiene - which had become the bulk of my adult diet. I hope to be one of the many who have lost large amts of weight and keep it off from her plan, I am confidant I will. Fortunately I have saved my old "skinny jeans" from my thin period and look forward to wearing them with pride once again. Thanks Suzanne!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A life Saver!, January 4, 2001
By
darb carter (Palm Springs, Ca. USA) - See all my reviews
I came in contact with this book last July, 2000. I found it to be very easy to read. Suzanne kept her focus on how she felt this way of eating made sence to her and why. I must admit I wasn't too sure that it was going to work. At this poiint in my life I guess I felt I didn't have too much to lose, or I should I say I had a lot to lose weight wise. I have always had problems with how my body would digest or not digest food. I can not eat certain things without a severe reation, now I understand why. These foods are on the do not eat list, avocados, bananas, peanut butter. If I would even take a bite of any of these foods I would end up at the hosptial in terrible pain. I also have suffered from other problems related to how my colon functioned or didn't function. Without going into any detail I will just say it was always something I had to think about and deal with whenever I ate period. I got to the point where I didn't even want to go out to eat in fear of what might happen. I can honestly say that not only have I lost 40lbs. but my quality of life has improved greatly. Nobody wants to talk about these types of difficulties but I felt it was important. I know there has to be other people out there that go through these same kind of things. I hope by putting these things out there that maybe someone might be able to be helped in the same way I was. To me losing the weight was just icing on the cake. Learning to eat this way is not difficult. Some of the things I have given up are things I loved to eat, potatoes, gravey, white bread, but the benifits are far more important and I don't ever feel like I'm dieting or going hungry. I will be able to eat like this for the rest of my life and be happy with it. I just want to say thank you to Suzanne Sommers for writing this book. My life is better because of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new way of life, March 20, 2000
By A Customer
I started Suzannes eating program as a "diet", it now has become and will remain a way of life for me. I have lost 35 lbs since Dec. 1, 1999 and gone from a size 16 to a size 10. But, the best part of this program is the way I feel. It took about a week to get on track and understand exactly what I was doing, but as my energy level grew each day, I knew I was on to something. Yes, I've had to "give up" some things, but I have found that there are other things out there to replace what I have given up. Also, those things I had to give up were the things that got me overweight in the first place. This is the easiest program for me to follow for weight loss that I've ever tried. There's no portion control; if I'm hungry I can eat, and boy do I eat. I'm actually eating breakfast, something that hasn't been done for years. Suzanne, thank you for making your plan available to all of us. The whole thing just makes sense.
