5.0 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD!!, November 22, 2005
This review is from: Suzanne Vega - Live at Montreux 2004 (DVD)
We've waited a long time for Suzanne to put out a concert video, and this one does not disappoint. I've seen her live 3 times, and she is a captivating performer. On this DVD, Suzanne seems a bit detached from the Montreaux audience, and I think the chemistry might have been better with a U.S. audience. But even so, the intimacy is there.

The sound is very good (thanks DTS 5.1), but not great like the West 54th Sessions concert. I really wish they would put that entire performance on DVD (& every other Session @ West 54th for that matter). Suzanne's band has always been top notch. They're cool when they need to be, and they can rock when they need to. I'm especially enamored of bass player Mike Visceglia. He lays down some of the coolest bass lines i've ever heard.... and looks cool doing it!

This concert DVD is a real treat. Suzanne looks and sounds wonderful, and delivers a great performance. Some things could have been done better, but I still give it 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Must!, March 1, 2006

This review is from: Suzanne Vega - Live at Montreux 2004 (DVD)
Suzanne Vega Live At Montreax 2004 is a must if you like Suzanne Vega. She is in good form, looks healthy, tries to include the audience in her performance and the song selection is well chosen. She makes a brave attempt to cover The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes." The only weakness seems to be her band (particularly the bassist) sometimes seem to over power her vocal. The best moments are are when Suzanne solos or plays with just one band member or when her guitar is the dominate insturment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Fans, October 14, 2007
By
This review is from: Suzanne Vega - Live at Montreux 2004 (DVD)
I've always been enamored of Suzanne Vega's intelligent, anecdotal songwriting and feathery, waif-like delivery. The songs here are impeccably performed with a mostly restrained but expert and well-rehearsed backing trio of guitar, bass, and drums. On only one tune is there the industrial backing rhythm which was indicative of a few of her recordings from the '90s. Vega exudes a genial presence with the enthusiastic late-night Montreux audience.

What stands out is the fine high-definition camera work as well as the transparent post-editing which lends a most appropriate viewing ambience and rhythm to the performances. Close-ups are steady and crystal clear. The set is lengthy enough to make for a fine DVD document that should please all fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suzanne Vega Live in Concert!, November 12, 2005
This review is from: Suzanne Vega - Live at Montreux 2004 (DVD)
This is a really Europien tour. "Live at Montreux"-Jazz, in Switzerland! This concert is "free and easy" with full living moments. The music is so fantastic and so timeless. The old songs are in new dresses. Sometimes the DVD's sound is weak, maybe at Suzanne solos, but the trio's sound with Suzanne is so dazzling. Drummer Doug Yondell and bass player Mike Visceglia are very attractive. Electric guitarist Billy Masters is masterful and a good choice. The last song is a jazz standard, because this is Montreux! and Suzanne is a good jazz singer too.

Suzanne Vega is still a singer-songwriter Queen!

Buy this DVD, highly recommended!

The sound is very good, the video quality is very good, and she plays a nice selection of songs. This video plays as a complete show from begining to end with no cuts/inserts/etc... you get to see it just as if you were there. Great for the family as background music on sunday afternoon cleaning house days!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Concert Video, April 29, 2008
This review is from: Suzanne Vega - Live at Montreux 2004 (DVD)
This is a great concert video of Suzanne's 2004 performance at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Great versions of some of her best songs. The concert takes place in a larger theater but Suzanne's performance in combination with the lighting, camera angles and closeups end up creating a very intimate ambiance that becomes more comfortable as the show progresses. High points for me include her performance of "Caramel," the story behind "Gypsy," her versions of "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Have You Met Miss Jones" a jazz song written in the forties she closed with. The DVD includes bonus tracks from her performance at the festival in 2000 opening for Lou Reed. I agree with other reviewers that the performance, lighting and sound are better on the bonus tracks than the main concert itself and as it's just three songs it does seem like a bit of a teaser.

This DVD also comes in a collector's version which includes a cd of the performance. This is the only difference. Unless you feel you need it, it's not really worth paying the extra money to get the cd because it does not include "Behind Blue Eyes" or "Have You Met Miss Jones" the two songs she covers during the show and really does a wonderful job with. The songs that do appear on the cd you can get better versions of from the albums they appear on.

All in all a great concert DVD. I've seen her in concert twice and while it doesn't represent her best performance, it's certainly worth owning. Great for fans, especially for the two songs listed above which I don't believe you can find elsewhere. Also great if you've never seen her in concert before, you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peak Vega, quality disc, August 30, 2007

This review is from: Suzanne Vega - Live at Montreux 2004 (DVD)
This is one of my favorite music DVD's, and I have a lot.

The song selection is terrific. "Gypsy" is probably my favorite, but a relatively obscure SV song. The sound is excellent. Suzanne was also at peak cuteness IMO at this point, and when she looks at the camera and smiles during "Left of Center" I'm just oh so happy about it.

Unless you're very attached to Suzanne Vega songs after 2004, I see no reason why a fan of hers wouldn't love this DVD.
