4.0 out of 5 stars Good beginner horn, but not for intermediate or advanced players, October 9, 2008

Obviously this is a beginner horn. It is a nice horn with decent slotting. The standard 7c mouthpiece is strong silver plated, and works great, but it does need extreme scrubbing every day after play. Normally I'll just go rinse them, but this one needs a scrub. There are 2 braces on main lead, which is just that much more attention to detail. Some issues that I have with the horn, is that it is only free-blowing to an extent. After a certain point, it will lock on you. I do not know if this is because of the 7c mouthpiece that came with it or not, but ffff is not as easily done with this horn, as another. I have had a minor issue with the first valve. It sticks a little, so I have to oil it 2x as much, and it rotates a little. It is not very tight. I give it a little extra oil to stop any leaks, and that seems to do the trick. I do play often, and while I would not consider myself advanced by any means, I do like this horn. The mouthpiece that it comes with does slot ok, but isn't as responsive as I'd like in the lower registers. In the middle and upper it does ok. As I've had to move, and pawn my beautiful old back strat, this horn had done suitably well for my needs, and for anyone who is in the beginner stage, who knows this is the instrument they will go with, I would definitely recommend this horn. It is very well machined, and comes with the suzuki name. As a beginner horn, I can't recommend it enough. As an intermediate or advanced horn, stick with a xeno or a strat, or something higher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Student and Instructor give this trumpet a thumbs-up!, August 31, 2008

This trumpet looks exactly like the excellent photos included on this page. My sixth grader was excited by the aluminum case, and my 12th grade saxophone player thought it looked good. His best friend plays trumpet and french horn and said it was good too. But I worried what the band instructors would say after they sent home a note warning parents not to buy from the big chain stores because of inferior quality. Well, the trumpet instructor was pleasantly surprised when he pulled the trumpet from its case, and told my son it was a "great" trumpet. I ordered with Prime, and paid for the $3.99 overnight shipping. We received the instrument within twenty-four hours.

I highly recommend this musical instrument.

***UPDATE: 12/2008

Still doing great. One of the mother-of-pearl "caps" fell off and we had to hot glue it back on the key, but it still sounds fantastic, and we just had our first Christmas concert.

***UPDATE: 02/04/2012

Well, he's a freshman in high school marching band and this trumpet saw him through his first marching season. All the pearl caps have fallen off the key, and I ordered him a new mouth piece that is better suited for a more mature player. He actually got first chair in symphonic band so I guess this is a fine piece for a starter trumpet. Of course he makes noises about wanting a new, better trumpet, but he is making do with this one and I don't believe you can do better for a starter!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough for beginners., November 2, 2010

Oh, how I anguished over what kind of trumpet to get for my 11-yr-old son. Our small school doesn't offer its own rental program, so we were planning on driving an hour away to the music store...good thing we called ahead: they didn't have any trumpets. I searched and searched online and read review after review. After all, you don't want the band director telling you that you bought a piece of junk. After this one arrived, the band dir. did say that Suzuki isn't usually a recommended instrument. (Most tell you to get a Bach or Yamaha for $1000.) Anyway, he said this one would do for a few years. It's a decent trumpet for beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be any better!, November 6, 2010

This review is from: Suzuki Deluxe TR-SC Trumpet Outfit (Electronics)
I'm a beginer, so when i bought this trumpet i know nothing about trumpets at all, and i chose this one because it was sold by amazon.com, so if the trumpet wasn't as good as i expected, then i could return it without any hassle. Now i've been taking lessons for about a month, and i know just very little, but enough to realize that i couldn't have chosen a better trumpet to start. The thing sounds so clean and nitid, the shine is great and the color combination is beautiful, i already took out the valves, and my teacher told me that they look like the very high quality valves, i don't know anything about that, but if he says so, he's been playing for more than 20 years. Also a great thing about the valves is that they click when in the right position and each are marked with its corresponding number. That saves the problem is taking them out for clean up, and then worrying about the position. About the tubing and bell, they seem to be of good quality, not easily dented or scratched. The case cound be a lil lighter and had space for two mouthpieces, but it only comes with one hole for that. About the mouthpiece, this one is very shiny, and not easyly scratched, also looks like an expensive one.
Conclusion, this trumpet is like any other that sells for more than $1500, only that this one costs a lot cheaper, i've been to the big music store close to me house, and they sell the Bach trumpets for a lot more money than whay i paid for this one, and to be honest and seriouly just, this one looks probably a lil better and is as good as the Bachs they sell.
I recommend it to anyone in the beginer, intermediate, even the pro stage. No reason to pay more for a good instrument, becuase it won't be much better than this one.
