Product Description

In order to play a chromatic scale on the normal 10 hole harmonica (Below: 10H), you have to use difficult overblow/overdraw techniques, which require harmonicas with very delicate reed setup. The new Suzuki SUB30 Ultra Bend changes all that! Now you can get a chromatic scale by normal playing using a simple bending technique. With the SUB30 Ultra Bend, you can easily play phrases and music styles that you gave up on before, because you could not get some notes. A normal 10 hole harp has 20 reeds: two reeds in each hole (one blow & one draw). The 30 reed SUB30 Ultra Bend harp has an extra Sympathetic Reed in each hole, one tone below the pitch of the lowest note. This reed is normally passive. It only becomes active when the player wants to bend the low note in each hole. (1-6 low & 7-10 draw). On a normal C harp in hole 4, you can get a bent note C# between C and D, but you cannot bend the C note. To bend C, you need a reed lower then C. That is the 3rd Sympathetic Reed of the SUB30 Ultra Bend! In hole 4, this reed is tuned down to a Bb. That means you can now bend the C down to B! The same applies throughout the range. Every single low note in each hole can now be bent down a semitone! It is these 10 extra Sympathetic Reeds which allow you to play fully Chromatically by bending technique alone. The revolutionary new SUB30 Ultra Bend harmonica gives you 18 bends of a semitone or more (instead of the usual 8 on a normal harp)! And these are all stable bends, easy to control at the correct pitch, bend up and down, add vibrato etc. - just the same as the bends you're use to already.

I love the reliability of the Suzuki Promaster valved ultrabends. I find it lacks the power of the Hohner XB 40, But I have 4 of the latter in a harmonica shop now dealing with rattling reeds!
BAck to the Suz. Ultrabend: By "lacking power" I mean you need more air to begin to approach the volume of the XB 40. The sound is "true," It seems to me the bends are more controlled.
I take the Suzukis with me when I play. Just can't seem to feel comfortable with the reliability of the XBs.
Finally, I have valved and non-vaulved Promasters. Get the valved! So much more expression through these ultra bends...

My preference, which is the Hohner XB 40, is being discontinued. I hate that fact, and this does not replace the XB 30, but it really is a lovely harp. It's got a nice, light-weight comb and you can get incredible results with practice. Responsive, and perfectly tuned straight from the factory. Mine was shipped from Japan, it arrived quickly and it made my day. It's a GREAT blues harp, I strongly suggest you try one. It is well worth the money, if you are a serious player. I intend to purchase at least three more, perhaps more if I cannot locate the XB 40s I need to complete my collection. I certainly understand why Suzuki is so proud of this harmonica. I have fallen in love with Suzuki harps. They learn from their mistakes, and they evolve. They accept feedback from the players, Mr. Suzuki has the heart of a blues harpist, so he responds accordingly. This is a harp he must be very proud to have named for himself. I'm sold on the Ultrabend, and glad they make it. I am not a technical person, I play by ear, and my review is based on ease of play, the feel of the harp in my hand, and the quality of the sound. I believe the comb is lucite. This harp fits easily in my rack, and I've had great luck playing with the guitar/keyboards. That was one thing I could not do with the XB40,. I'm thrilled with this new addition to my collection, and eager to see what else they introduce down the road.

Having a ultrabend Hohner, I was curious about the Suzuki one. And what a pleasant surprise!
Not only the sound is great, but also it is much more ergonomic than the bulkier Hohner one.
I certainly recommend it!
