4.0 out of 5 stars Suzy comes through
The last edition of Born to Shop disappointed me becasue Suzy Gershman's interest seemed so narrow that the stores and places she liked were too far out of my range. In this edition she's made some changes. Cheap shopping is listed and the luxe, nowhere else except NYC stores are listed as well. 1.0 out of 5 stars Great list of stores to send your PA to in your chauffered car -- not so great for the rest of us.
This book is a great resource if your in NYC while your husband is conducting very important business (perhaps on Wall Street or if he's charitable at the UN) and while you're relaxing at the spa you decide you absolutely need the newest high fashion item that is second to none and totally unique and so you reach for your Blackberry and demand that Georges the chauffer...

The last edition of Born to Shop disappointed me becasue Suzy Gershman's interest seemed so narrow that the stores and places she liked were too far out of my range. In this edition she's made some changes. Cheap shopping is listed and the luxe, nowhere else except NYC stores are listed as well. She must have gotten some younger helpers because much to my delight the Sean Jean store and and Triple Five Soul shop are mentioned too. One thing I've always liked about the Born to Shop series is that the advice shows you how to get around town safely, how to buy quality and how to have a good time with as few hassles as possible. And don't think this book is just for women. In our last trip to NY my husband frequently consulted it and was very pleased with the directions and commentary.

This book and Gerry Frank's guide are all you really need to take a weekend NYC trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Shopping Guide, July 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for a trip to NY with a shop-a-holic teen and it was very helpful. We marked the stores we wanted to go to and them put them on a map and off we went! Most descriptions were accurate although with any book about retail, some of the stores were gone. Because we had so many it wasn't a big deal. When this guide says to go to Century 21, you should GO!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shopping in NYC is not for the faint hearted, February 21, 2010

Suzee "Moving to Manhattan" (Portsmouth, NH United States) - See all my reviews
Shopping in NYC is not for the faint of heart - you could spend all your time searching for your store or going in circles - especially in the village. Suzy's book gives you a good idea of where to find items, and what you can find in the neighborhoods of manhattan. It's a great introduction to get your shopping trips in line, using your time wisely :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A good comprehensive book - with reservations, July 5, 2006

This review is from: Suzy Gershman's Born to Shop New York: The Ultimate Guide for Travelers Who Love to Shop (Paperback)
There is a problem with travel books in that they try to cover EVERYthing in a city. I like books that just tell me the best places to go for what I want.

This book leans towards being a total reference, but offers the shopper plenty of options.

The bargain shopper needs to know one thing - Century 21 next to the world trade center site. That is about where the unbelievable bargains end. Now you can save some money on the book and spend it on shopping

One nicety about the book is that the author includes place to eat around the shopping.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great list of stores to send your PA to in your chauffered car -- not so great for the rest of us., May 3, 2010

This book is a great resource if your in NYC while your husband is conducting very important business (perhaps on Wall Street or if he's charitable at the UN) and while you're relaxing at the spa you decide you absolutely need the newest high fashion item that is second to none and totally unique and so you reach for your Blackberry and demand that Georges the chauffer take Isabella your PA directly out to find it. Hand her the book and Isabella ma cherie shall be able to navigate NYC to find you a $3000 dollar dress and handbag. Meanwhile there are a few pages that will allow her and Georges to stop off and find for themselves at one or two discount areas. But tell them to be quick you'll need her as a foot stool while they're doing your pedicure.

Oh wait, you don't have a chauffer named Georges, a PA named Isabella, a very important husband, or a suite at the Plaza Athenee? The girls from Sex in the City aren't quaint girls who are making due with bargain finds on your television set? Well join the rest of us, we're very welcoming. But this book -- or any of them by Suzy Gershman(I've been gifted with 3 of them recently) -- well they aren't for us little people.
