Book Description

July 1, 2002
This English translation from the original Sanskrit by Adi Sankara is a very clear, aphoristic explanation of what the Self is and the Knowledge that reveals it. Each verse is presented in its original Sanskrit (Devanagari) form, a transliteration into English letters, word-for-word translation, and fluent, running translation. The word-for-word translation also gives alternative meanings for many phrases in the verses. Sankara's teachings in this volume are very reminiscent of Ramana Maharshi's, and are a penetrating and glorious revelation of what is one's own True Self.

About the Author

The late Dr. H. Ramamoorthy was a foremost Sanskrit scholar and expert in Tamil. He was renowned for his humility, subtle humor, devotion, and a superlative clarity of expression even when dealing with the loftiest Hindu scriptural texts. During the period from 1989 to 2001, Dr. H. Ramamoorthy and Nome worked in close collaboration to translate numerous Advaita Vedanta texts, from Sanskrit and Tamil, into English.

Nome is a spiritual teacher at Society of Abidance in Truth, known by the acronym SAT, which established and maintains a temple for Nondual Self-Knowledge in California. Nome teaches Advaita Vedanta, especially as is contained in the teachings of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. These teachings are those found in traditional Advaita Vedanta as expounded by Adi Sankaracharya, Ribhu, and the Upanishads. Nome is a teacher of this spiritual knowledge, an author of the same, and a translator of Vedanta texts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Svatmanirupinam -- The true definition of One's own Self, August 5, 2008
This review is from: Svatmanirupanam: The True Definition of One's Own Self (Hardcover)
This basic exposition of Nondual Truth by the great Adi Sankara has been long unobtainable, and is apparently little known even among scholars of Advaita. It is a gem.

Although it is presented here in a scholarly format, with the Sanskrit, transliterations, and literal transcriptions of every verse, it is the four-line English versifications in plain but elegant English that will illuminate, for most of us, the philosophically impeccable essence of Sankara's exposition of Nonduality.

Who would be uninterested in such a detailed description of "one's own Self"? In one of his exquisite "mandala" poems (in Self-Knowledge) Nome has described the very preservation of Nondual Knowledge such as this as "Exquisite care and the most profound wisdom preserved in scriptures... To awaken from an ages long dream." Great reverence for the Nondual tradition is evident in every detail of this book, in the care and understanding of the Truth it preserves.
