Make an East African happy, buy and give away this book!, June 5, 2005
This review is from: Swahili New Testament with Psalms (Paperback)
I read a story about an itinerant "homeless" man who traveled the United States, and gave away Bibles. He worked enough to buy food for himself and to keep enough Bibles to give out to people that he met.
That story inspired me, and now I keep Bibles in about 15 languages in my car. (And I keep copies of the Book of Mormon in about 50 langauges in my car too.)
Whenever I meet people speaking a foreign language, or who speak with an accent, I ask where they are from, or what languages they speak. If I have a Bible and/or a Book of Mormon in the car in their language, I offer the books to them, free of charge, plus an English copy to go with it if they want one.
I've met several immigrants who speak Swahili. They are usually from East Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.
You should see the look on peoples' faces when you offer them a free Bible in their native language.
Most of them don't have material in their native language, and are very hungry for it. And the Bible has supposedly been translated into more languages than any other book.
Scriptures, aside from the spiritual aspects, then become the "Rosetta Stone" for languages; for learning a new language, honing up on the old one, and for teaching the language to children to preserve cultural heritage.
For centuries, people used to use the King James Bible to teach English. The Bible can still be used like that today for all languages.
The look on the faces of the people to whom I gave copies of the Bible was well worth the price.
Amazon.com is generally less expensive than the other sources of Bibles in world languages, American Bible Society, and International Bible Society.
