Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

Coot Club and The Big Six are the first two feature length videos to be released which are based on British writer Arthur Ransomes series of childrens books SWALLOWS and AMAZONS FOREVER.,,, The footage of wildlife and of the lovely scenery seen as the boats sail down the river are a plus as is the interesting background music. The childrens concern for preservation of the ecology and endangered wildlife is a major theme which is worked into the plot. The 1930s setting seems authentic with vintage transportation and farming equipment. A time of innocence and romanticism when children were free to explore without parental supervision and where good always prevails is depicted.... Stereotypes are avoided by portraying males and females as equally resourceful and strong. Both of these productions are the kind of wholesome entertainment that families can enjoy together. Libraries with an interest in videos that tie in to literature will find these to be an especially desirable purchase.

Video Description

Coot Club and its companion story, The Big Six, are based on the celebrated Swallows & Amazons series of childrens' books written by Arthur Ransome. For anyone who loves sailing and adventure, the Arthur Ransome classics stand alone. Set in the '30s, both stories take place on the lakes and waterways of England, and feature the same cast of lively characters, led by six children, who become firm friends, sharing a love of wildlife and all things nautical. The fun and adventure of a life afloat sparkle off the screen. These movies were produced on location in England by the BBC.

From the back cover: Dick and Dot have to be taught the art of sailing, because they are spending their first holiday afloat with Mrs. Barrable. On hand is the doctors son, Tom, and a pair of twins that are such expert sailors they are nicknamed Port and Starboard. The adventure begins with the Hullabaloos, a party of noisy holidaymakers on the river who are damaging the riverbanks and wildlife. Tom is forced to free their boat from its mooring to save a coots nest. Then, Tom, Dick and Dot, joined later by the twins, sail south on a cruise. Will the Hullabaloos catch up with them?

5.0 out of 5 stars ADVENTURE FUN FOR ALL AGES, December 11, 1999
By
As the mother of two eager boys, I am always on the lookout for quality films that will grip their attention. Claude Whatham's excellent direction of a superb cast in "Swallows and Amazons" brings all the excitement and camaraderie of Ransom's books to life with wit and humor. The only thing better than reading the books is watching this video! No formulaic stories with pulsating sound track and gyrating female figures -- this is just a great story well portrayed. A family film at its best! Hurrah and let's have more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended., April 3, 2000
A 6 yr old "highly energetic" boy and a 9 year old "sophisticated" girl were both riveted by this beautiful film. Unique adventures, sympathetic characters and a fabulous location make this faithful rendering of Arthur Ransome's book a joy to watch. But be warned: I know kids who have been seriously inspired by this story!

5.0 out of 5 stars True to the book, October 5, 1999
By A Customer
I feared that the movie would be a "Disney-fied" version of the beloved book. But no, the movie was a delight, the casting excellent, and the story true to that in the book in look and deed.
