Book Description

As the world's worst housekeeper, running holiday homes wasn't, with hindsight, a sensible idea. But two collapsing buildings on Susie Kelly's land would cost more to demolish than to restore. Thus she became a seasonal landlady. Swallows & Robins - The Guests In My Garden is the true story of a beginner's attempts at running two holiday homes in remotest France and her love/hate relationship with her guests. But before the guests came the builders. No's 1, 2, 3 all started promisingly, but by builder No. 4, and with her first guests just hours away, Susie's patience was stretched to its limit.

Her summer and winter visitors couldn't, as they say, be made up, though, to spare their blushes some of them have been air-brushed. They brought with them laughter, tears, romance, friendship and occasional madness. And they all left behind jars of jam and pots of pepper. From them Susie learned that you don't need to travel to find adventure. If you run holiday homes it comes to your doorstep. Unfortunately for Susie, and her attempts at homes and gardens housekeeping, this included Ivy. The cleaning lady from hell.

'Its absolutely brilliant, it made me laugh - in fact snort out loud - and then cry. Susie is a marvellous writer.' The Good Life France.

'There are a handful of authors that will achieve that elusive trick of making you laugh out loud. For me it's James Herriot, Bill Bryson & Susie Kelly.' French Entree Magazine June 2013

'Reading her books is like listening to relaxing music...' Amazon UK Rev

'This is another Susie Kelly great read that often had me laughing out loud as we meet the various builders, her local friends, the good guests and the bad who popped into her life over a four year period.' French Village Diaries

'I really enjoy reading Susie Kelly's books and this one was no exception. I was really sorry that she no longer rents out the gites - I was ready to book one for a holiday just so I could meet her.' Amazon UK

'I loved this book so much, I couldn`t put it down. I laughed and cried at all the characters. It is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. Go and buy it today.' Amazon UK

The best in travel humor. If you enjoy funny kindle books by Bill Bryson, or A Year In Provence by Peter Mayle, you will love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have recommended Susie Kelly's books to friends... July 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A great mixture of laugh-out-loud and poignant moments in this book along with a few downright sad ones. I enjoyed (or was horrified by) Susie's guests right along with her and certainly identified with her dislike of housework. Susie sounds like a very generous and sympathetic person. One particular event is still haunting me: what an awful thing to happen to Tristram; whoever he is and wherever he is now, I hope life has taken an upward turn for him.
I have read Travels With Tinkerbell also and will definitely be reading more of Susie Kelly's books. I thoroughly enjoy her writing style and content and have recommended them to friends. (NZ reader)

5.0 out of 5 stars A good entertaining read October 16, 2014

Light reading, but very enjoyable. I'm always interested in reading about other people's experiences, and particularly when they are so different from my own. I enjoyed the author's stories of the many and varied people who stayed in her holiday cottages in rural France. She has a wonderful talent for writing naturally and with warmth, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an entertaining glimpse into other people's lives.

When I chose this book by the title I thought it was something to while away an afternoon. I did not realize how I would look forward to the various characters. I have become enthralled with all I have encountered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read March 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My only complaint about this book is that it is too short!!!!!! I could go on reading about Susie's life endlessly. I have read all her other books, and I love them, but this one is my favourite.

of course it's fun to imagine running a small bed and breakfast in France. She is full of interesting info about the history of the area of France she lives in and is able to make the reader feel like they are right there with her through the experiences. Really enjoyed it.

I have just finished reading this for the second time and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. I intend to read all Susie's books again. She was pretty brave coping with all the different types of guests, not to mention Ivy!!
