4.0 out of 5 stars swan road
I can't believe there is anything less than a 4 star rating for this book. It was written with much detail reflecting the times and kept me on the edge as to how the hero was going to protect his beloved from the enemy. It is on my keeper shelf and one of my favorite "Rebecca" books. I highly recommend it. The cover illustrations are beautiful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way too bloody
This book was way too bloody for my taste. I could have done without the decapitations, spouting blood and gang rapes. It often seemed as if the author felt she invested too much time in researching the period to leave out historical information that was ultimately unnecessary and confusing. This book was way too bloody for my taste. I could have done without the decapitations, spouting blood and gang rapes. It often seemed as if the author felt she invested too much time in researching the period to leave out historical information that was ultimately unnecessary and confusing. It was hard to believe in her characters -- the heroine falls in love with a bloody marauder who attacked her homeland. A bastard raised in poverty spouts poetry to this princess. Not very believable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well-written., February 6, 1998

The author did a fine job of balancing romance with period information. Unlike many romance novels written about the 9th century Europe, the book lets us glimpse the social and political structures of the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Book, July 22, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Swan Road (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading the 4 previous reviews for Rebecca Brandewyne's book Swan Road, I did not think I would like it. But I decided to give the book the benefit of a doubt. I'm glad that I read it through because I really enjoyed it. Some parts are really informative, like how the vikings would put their dead men below the ship instead of casting them out to sea so they can bring the bodies back to their home for proper burial, and how the flies would swarm around and the stench was so bad. The author really made the character's experiences very real to me. I really enjoyed the ending! It was wonderful!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Well-Researched, March 8, 2011

This review is from: Swan Road (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the first book I have read by Rebecca Brandewyne, and I was impressed by how well she writes. A lot of authors in the romance genre have decent storytelling skills, but mediocre writing skills. This author is talented in both areas. She tells a compelling tale, writes vivid poetic descriptions, has an extensive vocabulary, and includes many historical details from her research into the Vikings during this era, all of which I appreciate. The only reason I am not giving this book 5 stars is because I think she sometimes overdoes the descriptive elements and wish she would be a bit more concise. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this book and will be reading more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars predictable but enjoyable, September 4, 2008
This review is from: Swan Road (Hardcover)
As a history buff, I enjoyed the fruits of Brandewynn's research, even when the details got gory.

That said, yes, the characters were a bit predictable, and there wasn't any humor or much surprise, but the book still kept me reading and took me far, far away, which is what historical fiction should do.

It made me re-read my Norse mythology.

This book was good in the fact that the author seemed to have researched this time period. There was some good romance and twists and turns in this book. I really liked the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Swan Road not very intriguing, December 29, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Swan Road (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was slow moving and at times boring. The story was bogged down with too many details and explanations of the period. I had to make myself finish reading it.
